DD LOVES LOVES LOVES heinz baby porridge and I don't want her to! It is the only 'baby' food product I buy, and I don't want to keep buying it! The rest of her meals are made from scratch and are tasty and lovely, plus the baby porridge is very expensive! I have numerous types of porridge oats in the cupboard, and have tried messing about with the cooking of them to make them creamy and delicious. Instead I have managed to make them horrid and lumpy and vile. Needless to say DD will not touch my porridge.

So - please help me! Has anyone got a recipe / method of using lovely porridge oats (or some other cereal grain?) and making a non-lumpy, creamy, soft, tasty porridge that my DD might actually enjoy as much as the one full of sugar in the box?

Thanks!

I use basic oats with a half half mix of milk and water, then close to the end stir in nutmeg and fesh double cream.

The key is to stir and stir and stir, like rissotto it's a labour of love, and keep checking until it is right.

I usually use a mixture of milk and water to make the oats in a pot on the stove (microwaves and I don't mix)

Perhaps if she is old enough, you could sweeten it up with a few raisins or add a few sunflower seeds or bran...

And don't neccesarily trust the packet instructions, add more liquid if it gets too thick.

Sainsbury's organic oats work for us - and we've tried LOADS!

mmmmmmm - am liking the addition of double cream in there! A lack of stirring may well be my downfall - I usually spend the rest of the day trying to scrape the pan clean!

I have tried sweetning in with prunes, pear, apples etc. I will try raisons next. DD is 7 months old. I will also try S'burys organic oats. I have some from a health food shop and even when cooked for ages they are still quite hard. This might be a silly question, but do you have to blend it to make it really smooth? Do you think this would help?

lol, I soon learnt if it starts to stick it's ruined.
It really does take a low heat, stirring, and a careful eye, and it's much easier
The first time I made it I just put it on the hob and came back five minutes later after I smelt burning.

For a young baby not quite ready for that much lumpiness, can you blend the oats a bit first to make the resulting porridge smoother I was wondering?

Try making it with oatmeal, rather than whole oats? Or use Readybrek, which is basically just finely milled oats with a few minerals and vits added. I add a bit of unsalted butter to mine for a bit of extra gorgeousness Couple of drops of vanilla essence too if you really want to go crazy...
