Raw Chicken Nightmare

TiddlerTiddler · 09/02/2008 23:25

Was making DS2's (7mo) lunch today which was chicken, potatos, some carrots and peas and baby gravy.

I finished feeding him and was clearing up when I saw that the knife I was using had been moved from my food prep area. So I said to DH - pls don't tell me you used that knife on DS1's lunch???. Answer was "Yes"

He basically, used the knife I cut up RAW chicken with to cut cooked fish for DS1 (3yrs). The knife had CLEARLY been used and he knew I was COOKING chicken. He just didn't think

So, despite the fact that my hands are red raw and bleeding from over washing to avoid this kind of cross infection, DS1 has now had his lunch tainted by a knife used to cut raw chicken.

Obviously, he hasn't actually eaten quanities of the raw meat, but food has been contaminated.

I am just hoping that he won't get some kind of compilobacter (spell?) type of sickness now. I am so upset by this as i am so careful and its all undone by one moment of not thinking . Hopefully I am just getting upset about nothing and that his stomach acid will kill any nasties.

How is he today Tiddler? Husbands eh!! Always doing silly things! Accidents like this seem to happen to me from time to time, and 9 times out of 10 things are all ok. Hope you didn't slaughter DH with the offending knife though.

Aaaw tiddler, bless you. That sort of thing drives me nuts. Men just don't think like us do they? Please let us know if your lo is ok

MrsBadger · 10/02/2008 13:56

I'm sure he'll be fine - we all have momentary lapses.
Have you considered colour-coded boards / knives, or is dh usually good?

NB Being sensible about food hygiene is one thing but washing your hands till they bleed isn't healthy - are you sure you're okay?

flamingtoaster · 10/02/2008 14:16

Hope your LO is OK today. I thought it was just my DH that could not be trusted not to use a knife/spoon/fork which is waiting to be washed!

TiddlerTiddler · 10/02/2008 22:07

LO is fine.. so far! Yipee. I have also calmed down from yesterday too! Phew.

I know it was an accident and these things happen... it was just so frustrating.

I now keep DS2's water separate in a jug because DH kept boiling the kettle just when I needed to give DS2 a drink of water! So maybe I should consider colour coding the knives to ensure marital harmony. I have already said we need to buy a second dedicated chopping board for meat.

The bleeding hands are not directly chicken/food related but just the frequency of having to bring DS1 to toilet (wipe bum etc.), going for a wee myself, changing nappies for DS2, prepping food and then washing up.. its just kiling them. I always have just washed them from nappy change when DS1 announces he needs a poo!!!!They have cracked in places and the cracks are bleeing. But am now lathering on heavy duty hand cream.

Tiddler - I developed cracked hands when DS was very young - I used flexitol, which is for dry and cracked heels - just don't do anything for 10 minutes whilst it soaks in - the cracks will heal really quickly.

I would buy a second dedicated board for chopping meat. Also, when you have finished chopping meat, automatically put the knife in the bowl and then confusion can't occur

MrsBadger · 10/02/2008 22:36

or if you have a nice bottom butter / barrier cream for ds2, use that on your hands every nappy change (the waitrose one is good)

PinkPussyCat · 11/02/2008 13:24

Glad to hear littleTiddler is ok!

Mmmm... bottom butter lol MrsB!
