8.5 month old not on solids

Hi

Just looking for people's experiences. My baby has always struggled even with breastfeeding and formula feeding. Had reflux for a good few months and got an aversion to bottles. Tried to move onto solids at 6 months but gagged and vomited too. Baby will try to feed himself sometimes but food rarely is swallowed. Recently got tongue tie assessed and advised baby has one so we are going to proceed with getting this sorted in the hope that it will help with solids. I am so worried about baby. It is my third child and while my second had reflux too they managed to do better with solids. Just looking for feedback as I'm not getting much help from gp etc. Don't know what else to get checked or who else to refer to.

Are you giving him finger foods? Stick of cucumber or carrot, thin slice of apple etc? Don't expect him to get much nutrition from them but let him play and learn tastes and textures. That will help him move on to other foods.

Thanks for the reply Parietal. Yes lots of finger food, lots of exposure to different textures and warm/cold food too. Sits either in highchair or on my lap while we eat. Baby will try food but mostly ends up on ground or squashed by their hands. Only the last few days I've seen an attempt by baby to chew but nothing being swallowed. Still gags but not to the extreme it was at the start.

My DS had TT and could only manage smooth purées until one.

Try those and I think things will improve after the division Flowers

My baby didn't swallow anything until 8months so I do think some babies take longer. And if he has TT sorting that may help.

@LittleMrsPerfect and @PritiPatelsMaker thank you for the replies. Fingers crossed 🤞

Push for tongue tie cut asap.
BLW is great, but why don't you do both BLW and purées? I made all ds's purées myself: it was a smooth journey, starting with potato, carrot, swede, quickly progressing into mashed up green risotto with every green veg I could find, into mashed up shepherds pie, less and less mashed, into normal meals. Alongside BLW.

My baby had terrible reflux, could never breastfeed properly, had awful wind, dribbled milk when feeding, the works. I had her assessed for TT when she was tiny but it was missed by two NHS people and a private lactation consultant (who, looking back, was more interested in smooshing DD’s head into my boob than looking in her mouth but that’s another story) when we had issues weaning I had her reassessed and found she had a 70% posterior TT 😢 A week after that was snipped the sick stopped and she was eating anything and everything ❤️

@Oblomov23 yes the earliest I can get the tongue tie released is start of April as being an older baby they need to do tongue exercises for a few weeks before they proceed.

What I've started doing the last few days is both (as I had a stash of pureed food in freezer). Baby tries to munch on whatever I've put out for blw and then I offer spoons during the meal too. Nothing has really changed yet.

@WorryMcGee yes same here - still very windy, can't manage bottles well still etc. Hoping my baby will be like yours and take off with feeding once the TT is done. Thanks for the positive feedback!
