6 month old projectile vomiting!

I'm new to this and this is my first post so hi all!

I am a FTM and my DS had turned 6 months last week. I kept him on infant formula (aptamil stage 1) since I stopped BF when he was a month old for personal reasons.

My DP and I have now starting DS on solids. We have gone with both spoon feeding porridge and baby led weaning with finger food as well. I'm finding it a struggle with him getting used to moving food around his mouth and swallowing without gagging it back up. Stuff like bananas and sticks of cucumber for example.

He doesn't eat a lot of it to which I have put it down to him not being used to it and will get the hang of it in time. Along with solid food we have switched to aptamil stage 2 milk for the remainder of his milk feeds.

My DP looked after him yesterday and told me that DS had projectile vomited everywhere with it coming out of his nose as well! I was quite surprised and just put it down to "maybe he drank too much/too fast?)
However, given him his last bottle of 6oz formula and the same thing has happened again when I put him down for the night! It went all over his hair, ears, eyes, and all over his bedding!

So my question is has anyone experienced the same? Is it that his belly is just getting used to solids and milk and is not handling it too well? I shall also speak to health visitor but sometimes she's not the most reliable.

You shouldn’t be introducing cucumber until at least 9 months. If you’re going to do BLW then you need to do some proper research.

The vomiting seems to have coincided with you switching the milk. Go back to your old milk and see if he tolerates it better and then reintroduce the new milk slowly and see if he can keep it down better.

Nothing wrong with introducing cucumber at 6months solidstarts.com/foods/cucumber/

the solid starts website is great for advice on introducing foods. There’s an app too.

you can keep him on stage 1 milk until over 1. We only ever used stage 2 stuff when stage 1 was out of stock. Stage 2/3 etc are just a marketing gimmick

Well I have been told otherwise by various sources that it is acceptable at 6 months. As long as it's around the length of your finger and you don't leave their side when they're eating..

So I have done plenty of research thank you, but I appreciate your opinion.

That's really helpful thank you!

I would also go back to the stage 1 milk and see if the problem is still happening. The WHO only recommends stage 1 until they are ready for cows milk after turning 1. He could also be taking too much milk if it’s too soon after food?

cestlavielife · 16/01/2023 13:45

True projectile vomiting (other side of the room) implies pyloric stenosis.

Is it going to other side of room (big concern)

Or just all over himself ?

Dd would bring up (vomit but not across the room) everything after eating eventually diagnosed coeliac

PritiPatelsMaker · 19/01/2023 16:44

I would go back to stage 1 formula as well. The NHS advise Stage 1 until their first birthday and then swap over to full fat cow's milk. They don't recommend follow-on milk.

Laurthomx · 19/01/2023 17:25

Thanks everyone!

I have switched back to stage 1 and he's already doing much better! With the stage 2 milk with it being from "6-12 months" I just assumed you'd move onto that. I now know I should've done my research on NHS website better😩

Rookie mistake and now I know! Thanks again for the advice x

It's easy to miss guidelines like that and I think you were particularly unlucky in that it had such a dramatic effect on your LO Flowers

trrk · 19/01/2023 17:44

Great to hear he’s doing much better. I’m also surprised there’s so much difference. I have a couple of cartons of Stage 2 that were brought by mistake and now I’m wondering whether to just chuck them out. Was never planning to deliberately buy Stage 2 but seems a shame to waste stuff that has already been brought.

My daughter was born at 24 weeks and the hospital recommended looking at The Caroline Walker Trust when we started weaning

Also glad baby is doing better op!

caringcarer · 19/01/2023 17:52

I used Aptamil after breastfeeding and just used Stage 1 until baby over 1 year.

It seems so wrong to promote "follow on milk" for money and marketing🙄 but then again, most things are I suppose 🤷🏼‍♀️

Absolutely! They aren't necessary at all! I only knew to stay on stage 1 because my HV told me to

Laurthomx · 19/01/2023 19:15

@Bellabon

Honestly! I've had so many different health visitors and midwives when I pregnant (due to lack of staff and some leaving/off sick with stress) that they all told me different things! So it's also hard to know which one to actually listen too..

Most things I look into and are related to me are on Mumsnet! 😳😂

That guide is really good isn't it @lamaze1? Wink
