High palate and weaning?

When reading about weaning I came across something about babies with high palates sometimes having problems such as food getting stuck or a strong gag reflex. We were told DD had a high palate when she was tiny (linked to a tongue tie that was snipped at 3 weeks) although I don’t know how it’s developed now. Has anyone in a similar situation at problems with weaning or am I worrying for nothing?

Thanks for flagging this. I have a newborn who has also been diagnosed with high pallet so I'll be interested in the responses.

Can I ask, is your baby really snuffly? The tongue tie practitioner said it's common. My daughter sounds really congested in her throat and back of the nose. Wakes her up from naps after 20/30mins 🤯🤯

My eldest had a high palate but no TT. She was a nightmare to breastfeed and I only managed for a couple of months before I couldn't bear the pain anymore as nobody could fix it and it was making me depressed. She enjoyed weaning from the get go and I wouldn't say she did much more gagging than my second child, but she definitely took to eating meals properly a lot slower. She wasn't hardly really eating solids properly until she turned 1 tbh whereas my second child was eating meals properly by about 7 or 8 months.

DD1 had a tongue tie and still has an incredibly high arched palate. She had many initial breastfeeding challenges, but took to baby led weaning with gusto, no issues at all beyond the expected occasional gagging. DD2, who does not have a high palate, was more challenging to transition to solids.

Thanks all for the reassurance! Hopefully we won’t have any problems with weaning.

My little one has a high palate and had tongue tie cut at 5 weeks old. We did have some issues weaning. There was a lot of gagging and vomiting for a good couple of months. We just stuck at it and he's 1 years old now and eats well. He did take a while to get into food because he was so put off with gagging and vomiting on everything. I have a friend who's baby took to solids really well though and her baby also had high plate and previous tongue tie. She did say bread used to get stuck in the palate but that can happen anyway. I wouldn't worry about anything yet as you may have no issues x

@trrk just wondering how you got on with weaning? We are just starting now and I’m concerned tongue tie and high palate will make it difficult. He had his tongue tie cut twice previously and it still reattached so we decided not to cut it a third time

We have been getting on OK, there has been quite a bit of gagging but I guess that is also normal for most babies. DD is 9 months now and having 3 meals a day but I’m never sure how much is actually ingested and she hasn’t totally mastered chewing and swallowing yet so maybe a bit slower than some but there is a wide range of normal. Haven’t had any problems with food getting stuck etc
