OK, how often should a 6mo BF/BLW baby poo? Surely more often than every 8 or 9 days...

My DS is 6mo and we started weaning about two weeks ago; nothing much goes in, but he enjoys sucking/gumming bits of veg/toast etc. My worry is that he's only done 2 poos since starting on solids, and I'm wondering if this is normal?

He's been BF since birth, and usually poos about every 3 or 4 days. The two dirty nappies we have had since BLW began have had bits of food in them, so I know something is going in...but how do I know he's not constipated?

He grunts and goes red a lot, but doesn't seem to be 'straining' IYKWIM. His favourite food so far is drained tinned prunes, so am hoping this will be enough to avoid getting bunged up!

So, I suppose my question is: how often should he be producing a dirty nappy now he's weaning? (Believe me, the fewer the better as far as cleaning up afterwards goes )

Is the poo hard and does he cry, if so then i would get it checked but my hv told me it's not unusual for a child to go 7-10 days without going as food takes a little longer to break down than the milk he was getting, you could try to give him a little cooled boiled water which would help in this department say a small cup with his meal!!

LittleBottle · 03/02/2008 22:22

No, he doesn't cry and it's typical BF consistency. I offer him a cup of water but he doesn't take much. I'm reassured that your HV said it's normal, thankyou

I have known friends children who only poo once a week or sometimes less- I am so jealous!!! My ds has always been at least twice a day and every nappy before he was weaned!

However, if he seems very uncomfortable, bloated or in pain then it's more likely to be constipation.

If he is quite happy and he seems to poo normally whatever that is- then just thank your lucky stars!

From what you say it does sound as though he is ok and will probably get easier as his body gets used to the food and he will probably go more regular once into established feeding pattern and if he is still getting breast milk then he hopefully won't get constipated!!

my theory is that if he isnt yet eating too much in the way of solids his body is absorbing more of the breastmilk so pooing less. doesnt sound like he is constipated but do watch out for that over next few weeks

it is a long time, imo, but not madly uncommon. i do know that dd gets a bit bunged up on banana, so maybe cut them out?

LittleBottle · 04/02/2008 11:31

Will steer clear of banana for a bit then...he's tried it a couple of times, but wrinkles his nose and drops it on the floor. Maybe he's trying to tell me something! (I hate bananas, so don't blame him really )

dd loves them now but when she was very wee she also did the nose wrinkling. it was funny cos all my pureeing friends were swearing by mashed nana and dd wouldn't touch it.

LittleBottle · 04/02/2008 12:25

He really doesn't rate the slimy stuff - avocado, banana etc. He loves juicy things like pear and prunes though. Presumably it's a bit of a weird texture in his mouth, and might take a bit of getting used to.

yep, same as dd. i'm not surprised, really. dd still doesn't like avocado and only got the hang of banana when i started leaving the skin on by cutting it in half to make two mini nanas and snipping the skin off a bit so that there was a handle.
