How much do your 1 year olds eat?

My 1 year old (who was ebf, and nursed constantly) has never really eaten much actual food and I'm wondering really how to get more food into him. At his 1y HV check, he was measuring 50 centile for height and 25 for weight, so he's not massively under weight for his size but they have booked me in for a follow up apt in Dec to see how he's getting on. This is all new to me as DC1 discovered food at 6mo and never stopped eating!

I've now pretty much weaned him from the breast and only has one feed a day in the morning, and he has around 12oz follow on milk a day (on a good day, sometimes he refuses to drink it all!) and is offered 3 meals a day and 2 snacks, he maybe swallows 2 mouthfuls, but most food is chewed up and spit out. We mainly follow blw but I try and spoon feed things like porridge and yoghurt. He refuses to be spoon fed for any other meal. He's offered water throughout the day. I'm worried he's not really getting enough calcium, let alone calories. How does he compare with your 1 year olds? Am I worrying for nothing?

What happens if you don’t give the snacks? Would he be hungry for meals? My first was a bit like this so mostly we just didn’t give her any snacks and she’d then eat a really good portion for meals. She’d have oatmeal made with milk for breakfast and also had a 7oz sippy cup of cows milk before bed but that was it milk wise because we found giving it to her throughout the day also ruined her appetite. She’s roughly followed the 70th centile for height and 50th for weight since birth so neither I nor the paediatrician has ever worried about her!

It doesn't matter if I give snacks or not, it makes no difference to how much he eats. I offer snacks more if he's eaten nothing for breakfast, for example. When he used to eat a decent breakfast I didn't offer food again until lunch but sadly he's not eaten a decent breakfast since July!

What does he eat? What is a typical day like? It is not only the frequency and quantity that matters, but also the food itself

Samanabanana · 12/09/2022 12:47

@Cormoran typical day - bf at 6am. Breakfast, he might eat two or three mouthfuls of porridge with raspberries. Sometimes he refuses. Will try alternatives such as toast or banana. Might have one bite of each of refused porridge. Snack - apple, might eat one or two bites. 4oz bottle (doesn't always finish). Lunch - cheese sandwich with cucumber and toms. Might eat one or two mouthfuls. Snack - oaty biscuit. Might eat one mouthful. 4oz bottle (doesn't always finish). Dinner - chicken tray bake with sweet potato and roasted veggies. Might eat one or two mouthfuls. Pudding - yoghurt and fruit puree. Eats all usually. 7oz bottle (doesn't always finish). All the food gets picked up/chewed but most is spit straight back out. Whether it's spoon fed or he feeds himself which is why he only swallows one or two mouthfuls at each meal! He definitely used to eat more, especially when I spoon fed him but he just spits that out now too. He eats similarly in nursery too...

Hi! I was just wondering how is your little one now? Mine has just turned 13 months old and still not very interested in solids, she basically breastfeeds through the night and I think that's how she's getting her calories. I'm just wonder if there's light at the end of the tunnel basically 😅.
Thank you

He mainly eats brilliantly now so it was just a phase. He still won't eat porridge or any kind of breakfast food though, unless it's dried Cheerios! He has continued to follow his curve for weight and height. I ended up night weaning him just under 12 months as he would nurse all night long too and I'm sure that had an impact on how much he was eating.

My boy has literally just turned 13 months generally he will have :

Bottle milk soon as he wakes up

A little after breakfast : 1 & 1/2 weetabix and some fruit

Lunch ; half a sandwich, yogurt and fruit

Dinner : spagbowl & garlic bread

He will also try and eat whatever we eat throughout the day and the odd snack lol

Bottle of milk before bed

But every baby is so different. He has his off days.
