8 month old weaning problems

My little boy is 8 months old and I started weaning him when he was 6 months. We started with BLW but he was gagging and vomiting on everything (I know it can be normal but this was upsetting him), We decided to go down the traditional weaning route of purées and building it up slowly. He gagged on smooth purées to begin with and was vomiting but we stuck with it. At 7 months I moved to textured purées and more finger foods. He has ellas kitchen puffs and carrot puffs , broccoli and has also tried pancakes. The problem is, he still gags a lot. If he has anything textured on his tongue, he will just pause, move his tongue around a bit and start to cry or gag. It's like he doesn't like the texture. He does fine with yoghurts and smoother stuff. He self feeds , I load the spoon because he refuses to be spoon fed, or he just scoops it up with his hands (it gets very messy). Just unsure where to go from here because he's just gagging on lumps continuously.
He also chokes a lot on water (every meal) and ends in a coughing fit. He's fine afterwards.
He does have interest in food but it's very hit and miss. I offer 2 meals a day currently, sometimes 3 and always a snack. I eat at the same time.
For background- He's EBF and feeds every 4 hours, history of silent reflux and tongue tie. He had it cut at 5 weeks old. He still has a shallow latch and brings up a lot of wind.
Any advice moving forward?

What types of finger foods are you giving?

do you give things like scrambled egg? Melon? Banana as finger foods that have soft easy textures?

No advice except to keep at it, even though it can be demoralising/upsetting/doesn't fit with how you imagined weaning.

DD was the same. EBF baby with a poor latch initially. Weaning was horrific and a slog.
Choked all the time, even on water. If she gagged at the end of a meal she would vomit up the whole meal and I'd feel so sad. Didn't have much interest in food. Add serious allergies into the mix and it was hell.

I had visions of amazing BLW foods, lots of recipe books, eating out at cafes with us...nothing like that. She was on smooth foods for a long time and it took so much perseverance (and trying not to panic every time she gagged) to get her onto texture, then lumps, then finger foods. She's still funny now and gags easily.

Does he choke as in actually choking or just coughing fit? If it's proper choking I would probably slow down a bit and try once or twice a day

My boy gagged a lot in the beginning. On almost everything actually, think it stopped around 1.

I hated every minute of weaning, dreading that bit already for a 2nd child! Lol. Hope it gets easier for you.

He's had scrambled eggs yes and also omelette strips , pancake. He's had banana but not a fan, although I keep trying, I find it's the worst for the gagging. Also tried avocado, he really can't stand this one. I've tried in strips , mashed and purée form. I still keep offering as know it can take take a while to accept a new taste.
He hardly consumes anything each meal. His breakfast was porridge with mango and a homemade coconut milk and banana and cinnamon lolly. He had about 1/2 a spoonful of porridge. Xx

Yes! You've literally summed up how I feel.
It's soo disheartening preparing these meals for it to get vomited up or thrown across the room.
How old is your little one now?
Mine also has suspected cows milk allergy but nothing else so far (touch wood). We haven't tried peanut butter yet.
Would you stick at the textured/lumpy foods? I feel like once he knows it's textured he's so reluctant to try any more than a spoonful X

He mainly chokes on water (coughing fit). He gags on food and manages to get it out. Sometimes it's A LOT of gagging until he eventually vomits and brings up whatever it was that he was gagging on. It's sometimes like the tiniest bit of pasta or something soft. He hardly eats anything really. I also hate weaning if I'm being honest, I didn't picture it like this at all. He moves around a lot in his Highchair and seems so agitated and always ends in a crying fit afterwards. I feed him in between his feeds so if he feeds at 6am I'll give breakfast at 8am and next feed is 10am (example). So I make sure he's hungry. I thought maybe he's too hungry and getting frustrated and have tried altering the times before/after milk. It doesn't make any difference x

Do you think maybe your seeing the gagging as a problem? Whereas the gagging noises are your D.C. learning to chew, learning how much he can put in his mouth and it’s all about how to do these things?

the water, is ut from a sippy cup and not a bottle? So again learning how to sip rather than suck?

Sounds very much like my boy was. Honestly, I hated every minute, he hated it too. You just have to keep trying. If I could go back & do it again, the advice I'd give myself is trust the baby, don't force the baby, follow his lead. Stay calm.
If you're still having trouble in a few months contact hv for advice but mine wasn't really interested until he was 1. X

Hello..
My baby is 8 month old
At 6.5 month we start doing blw. At first she like to overstuffing her mouth with food. After i teach her to slowdown she dont do that again.
But i notice this past 2 weeks, she always spit out her food. Before she never spits out. Everytime the food goes to her mouth she will spit it out.
I already try to put the food in side of her mouth but she will spit out again.
I dont know what to do.
Please help me

@lottie198 How’s your LO doing now? We’ve been weaning for a few weeks and DS is gagging and vomiting and getting quite agitated during mealtimes. Trying not to stress about it and give him finger foods but he gums a chunk off and then gags. Older DS was a champ with solids so it’s such a different experience this time around…

swirly3468 · 17/05/2023 19:37

@poppet131 how old is your little one?
My little boy is now nearly 17 months and eats great!! Honesly just stick with it. He gagged probably until around 1 years old but doesn't gag anymore and chews very well. Xx
