BLW rice, curry, etc

They say feed your child what you eat, bit me and DH eat a lot of Asian inspired meals- lots of rice, curries, spicy food, etc.

I've tried giving DD rice before but it makes so much mess! I know BLW should be messy, but this is more hassle than it's worth!

What does everyone do when you eat rice? DD hasn't got the hang of a spoon yet, so she'd be useless if I mixed non spicy curry sauce in with rice.

I seem to give her the same things over and over- rice cakes spread with hummus, nut butters or Philadelphia, veggie sticks and peices of fruit. I'd love to give her what we eat, but our meals don't seem suitable

Have you tried mixing the curry through the rice and then moulding them into balls she can pick up? That's what I did.

Often I'd do some extra veg on side too, like sweet potato wedges or tenderstem broccoli, that they could dip in the curry for the flavour. If you want a lazy option for that Iceland do Swimming World sweet potato chips which are just sweet potato that you bung in the oven ready to go, so you can do a few at a time to go on the side.

I'd be tempted to mix it with the sauce and mould it into little balls as well.

There's no reason she can't have spicy food either. If you think it's too hot, you could always mix in some natural yoghurt or crème fraiche?

Pitstop1986 · 09/08/2022 20:35

Oooh, good idea about the yogurt! I used to do this with curries fory neice when she was a toddler!

Just echoing what the others have said. I used to mix the sauce with rice to make little balls. Also used to put yoghurt into my curry to make it less spicy. My DC just ate what we did with little adaptations like this

BaronessBomburst · 09/08/2022 20:43

I have a tiled floor and underfloor heating. We just used to give it an hour for the rice to dry out and then hoover it up. Even on carpet I'd be tempted to leave it for a bit. Dry rice is far easier to sweep.
We fed DS the curry too, but I tended to pick out the biggest pieces of vegetables and shake off most of the sauce.

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/08/2022 20:45

I just put a towel on the floor to catch everything

clickychicky · 09/08/2022 20:45

Curried lentils can be squished together

CatSeany · 09/08/2022 20:46

I roll cold rice with cream cheese to make rice balls. Its a concoction but they don't mind and they can eat them more easily!

gogohmm · 09/08/2022 20:50

Mine had curry and rice but I spooned it for them. Blw doesn't have to be absolute

TheSleeperandTheSpindle · 09/08/2022 20:52

I had a wipeable mat I put under the highchair to catch spills but also had an overalls type of thing that attached to the tray to catch bits. Think it was called Bibado??

eurochick · 09/08/2022 20:59

I can remember my Indian friend rolling rice and daal into balls for her kids so that seems to be the way to do it.

OhImVisiblyOver25 · 09/08/2022 21:01

I just spoon feed really messy stuff.

VintageVest · 09/08/2022 21:02

Preload the spoon and hand it to her to get to her face. If you use two spoons you can load the next one while is messing about with the first. She has to learn somehow, but won't if you don't give her the chance. You will be surprised at how fast she learns.

IDontDrinkTea · 09/08/2022 21:03

I cook baby some stickier rice, eg risotto or paella rice as it clumps together better and then she can just eat it with her hands

Twizbe · 09/08/2022 21:05

I hated the mess of BLW so spoon fed where I could.

DC2 wasn't as keen on sooo feeding though so had to do some pancakes etc until she got on board with it.

It really doesn't matter how you wean OP. If spooning works better for you that's ok.

lunar1 · 09/08/2022 21:11

DH is Indian and we did BLW, they had what we had, I never modified the amount of spice in a meal I cooked, was just careful with the salt.

You've just got to let them be messy with this method. I mixed the curry and rice together and made sure it wasn't too wet.

Rowen32 · 09/08/2022 21:15

You can just feed rice with a spoon and let them eat the bits of veg/chicken themselves, that's what we do :-)

DiscoBadgers · 09/08/2022 21:17

Put a shower curtain under the high chair then just hose it off after.

saleorbouy · 09/08/2022 21:29

Eat alfresco on the lawn and then the birds will eat what missed the mouth. We just gave ours the same as we ate. Obviously reduced hot spice if required. Just feed with two spoons. One for them and one for you.
Cous cous is a good filler too. My DD loved it in custard with mashed banana, but it xan bulk out soups and sauces too.

SavingsThreads · 09/08/2022 21:55

Spread the curry on a rice cake!

RefuseTheLies · 09/08/2022 22:00

My 14 month old loves curry. I put a small amount of plain rice on her tray for her to fed herself and that keeps her occupied while I spoon feed her the rest. She mostly did BLW but I draw the line at curry 😁
