How much milk when weaning ebf baby?

DD just turned one. Still breastfed but down to around two feeds a day (morning and before bed). Sometimes once overnight too. I'm thinking of dropping the morning feed soon (she skipped it today as she woke late and I was at work). If I do continue to drop this feed, do I replace it with cows milk? Or does she continue to get what she needs from when she breastfeeds even if these are reduced? I know breastfed babies regulate their intake but what happens when we reduce how often they feed?

Not sure why this has only just occurred to me today Blush

Up to you.

I replaced with a cup of milk morning and night because they like it.

They still tend to have cups of milk morning and night at 5 and 3.

You don't have to though.

Ah ok that's great. I thought there was some recommendation based on nutrition still at this age and couldn't really work it out from a quick Google.

I've not tried her with cows milk yet (apart from on food) so I might start offering it at breakfast and see how she gets on.

There's no requirement for milk.

Some will say to offer a multi vitamin now or to ensure they have a couple of portions of dairy now instead.

My eldest is allergic to cows milk so until very recently we used growing up soya milk as it is fortified. We've moved to standard soya milk now.

Neither of mine would touch Cow's Milk until I'd completely stopped BFing. Like others have said you can offer Cow's milk if you like it, but don't stress if they don't want to drink it Wink

Thank you both. Just glad to know I'm not missing something I should be doing by not giving her cows milk instead 🤦🏼‍♀️.

She is a complete cheese addict and gets plenty of dairy so I'm not too worried about dairy intake.

I did try her with some cows milk today out of curiosity and she did take it. Maybe when she twigs what I'm doing and it's a replacement, not an 'extra' to me feeding her, she might start to protest 😂

It's just a calcium requirement, not specifically milk so you can meet that through other food. My DS1 didn't want milk that wasn't from the breast so he just had water in a cup and lots of cheese/yoghurt etc. DS2 was happy with cow's milk so I swapped feeds for cups of milk. Night weaned by then though.

We bottle-fed from quite early on but DS dropped all milk feeds apart from his bedtime one at 12 months, and even that one at about 18 months. He's just not interested in drinking milk, though he does have it in cereal and food, as you mentioned.

Of course, any breastfeeds offer benefits but plenty of children don't have (much) milk at this age. As long as there is plenty of calcium in the diet your LO will be fine 😊 xx

Paediatric dietitian told me that when DD was down to two feeds she needed 350 mg of calcium daily from other sources.
