Breakfasts for 14mo

Hi all,

My DD (14m) is still struggling a bit with solids. At the moment she's still just having breast milk for breakfast and I know that's not really enough. What can I give her that won't take her ages to get through? She'll gnaw at a bit of toast or fruit, but quickly gets bored or starts to gag. I've tried porridge with fruit purée mixed in, but she wouldn't eat it.

She has veg/meat purée for lunch at nursery, then fruit puree for an afternoon snack, and a slightly more adventurous dinner (omelette, toast, fruit...) but only ever eats a few mouthfuls of that.

Both DH and I work full time so mornings are a bit of a rush. That sounds like I begrudge making time for her to eat, but it's not that - it's all the clearing up afterwards! And also the mental energy to come up with ideas and get organised when she's still waking every 2 hours...

She only has 6 teeth if that's relevant.

Any ideas for quick, weaning-friendly breakfasts that aren't porridge?

If she's waking every 2 hours, is she feeding each time? If so, that might be the issue rather than what you're offering her?

Have you thought of trying a bit of gentle night weaning?

Number of teeth is irrelevant.
Can't she have 'things' on toast?
Mine would have any form of egg, beans, mushrooms, sardines, cheese , tuna etc Or if left overs around they would have those .
Reduce milk and use the hunger to encourage her. Don't worry about gagging, she is learning to manipulate the food in her mouth.you may need to just start earlier and obvs be sitting next to her eating your breakfast.

Weetabix with banana

How much milk is she having during the night and day?

She really should be on 3 proper meals a day at 14 months old

Aw bless you both! Weaning is so tough!

Is their a medical reason why she’s still on purées majority of the time? If no other reasoning not disclosed above I think general guidance is that she should well be on proper solids by now, perhaps offering her solids to hold and munch she would enjoy more.

my little one is miles behind her peers with teeth (still only got a few at the front top and bottom and 2 at the back at 2.3) but we did BLW and she’s never had purée so didn’t have the difficult transition to make.

have you tried the “what mummy makes”book by Rebecca Wilson I think it is, great quick breakfast ideas including 3 ingredient pancakes, porridge fingers, healthy (and bloody delicious) blueberry muffins you can make all in advance and freeze/defrost them.

my little one usually has porridge or weetabix and a bowl of strawberries and banana, or a crumpet/toast with the fruit (always the fruit, little fruit bat!!!)

agree with pp - avo on toast, nut butter on toast, cheese on crumpets etc?

can you get her up a bit earlier for breakfast or finish getting ready (hair/makeup etc) whilst she eats if that would help with timing?

also re the waking at night, if she’s feeding each time she probably isn’t hungry!

all the best xxx

Morning Breakfast ideas

Weetabix and banana
Porridge and banana
Baked oats I serve this with a mini custard pot or yogurt, you can Google the recipie for this
Mushed avocado on toast , cut them into slices for her to pick up and eat also.
Omelette with fine chopped peppers, tomatoes onions and grated cheese
Oat pancakes with your choice of fruit
Eggy bread
Normal pancakes with fruit
Warmed up crossaint and strawberries
Egg muffins - whisk an egg add ur toppings (cheese, ham, peppers, tomatoes) pour into Yorkshire pudding tin, oven for 20/25mins you can cut them up into manageable sizes
Sometimes my daughter has a really random selection of breakfast, pouch yogurt, chopped up fruit, crossaint and slices of avocado or tomato lol !

Lunch ideas

Pasta mixed with Philadelphia and tomato purée add cheese ontop
Salmon with sweet potato and broccoli (boil the broccoli soft so she can hold a chew easy)
Budda bowl - rice, avocado, sweetcorn, fine chopped cucumber , grated carrot, sweet potato and tomatoes

I also buy some stuff like the Annabelle karmel packs, I still cut up chicken pieces etc as I was so panicky about lumps

For her dinners she has what we have now, spag Bol, chilli, curry, sausage casserole, salmon, chicken and rice, Sunday lunches, just try main dishes like this but chop them up so they are manageable pieces , before chopping up I used to pop anythjng I made in the blender and give it a few pulses and gradually left them lumpier and lumper until I just started cutting them up with a knife and fork.

Weaning scared me so I know how you feel regarding the gagging, but I would recommend to try and stop with the puree- my friends little boy had purée up until this age because she was scared and he now has problems with most foods and still gags and only eats very limited food, he is healthy so no problem but its obviously better to get full nutrition!

I hope your little on enjoys some new breakfast ideas Smile

Have you taken her to make sure there isnt actually anything wrong with her throat?

At 14 months old, She should be on normal solid food

Wow, people have taken so much trouble to help here, thank you all. Yes, she's basically feeding all night as we co-sleep, so that's clearly something to work on. It's just that the thought of sleeping even less, even if it's temporary, makes me want to cry. I'm going to check with the pediatrician too re the gagging. I feel like I've let her down on this, but I feel like my head's going to explode with all the stuff I have to do on so little sleep. At least her weight and development are fine so far, so she must be getting enough nutrition. But obviously she needs to develop and move on to "grown up" food asap. Thanks again.
