Teething Nappies - are they for real?!

Hi all, my 5-month old DD has recently cut her first two teeth. This bout of teething coincided with me starting her on puree (I was giving her 2 teaspoons a day, so a very small amount). She was initially constipated for a couple of days, which I know is normal when starting weaning, but then proceeded to have very different nappies to normal. She usually would go once a day, sometimes every other day, and her poop would be a brown colour. Now she is going up to 6 times a day, often in smaller amounts, and her poop has turned yellow-greenish. She is waking in the night and, within a couple of mins of waking, she has a blowout, so we are now having to change her nappy once or twice a night which is a right headache.

At first we thought it was the introduction of puree but this has been going on for 3 weeks and, still, no change. A friend said to me it sounded like teething nappies - has anyone else experienced this? NHS says it's not a thing but I know many parents say it is.

When should I expect this to stop?! As I said, two teeth have now cut but the nappies aren't stopping. Went to the Dr's the other day and they said DD was in good health and they can't spot anything unusual. Have sent a sample off (yuk!) to check for bacteria but, otherwise, all seems fine. Help!!

I'm sure I was told my sons sudden nappy rash might be connected to teething, something to do with changes to the saliva when teething. (30+years ago so memory fading)
So there could be something in it!!

I'd stop weaning for a couple of days and see if her nappies improve .

It could be teething but it could also be immaturity of the gut or inflammation. If it's either of these a couple of days without solids won't hurt and it will give her advance to heal Wink

Teething poo is nasty ! Make sure you’ve got bum cream in.

Thanks all. Still not much change this end unfortunately. Test results came back clear and DD seems happy otherwise, but the nappies keep coming! We stopped weaning for over a week but that didn't seem to change anything. Have started puree again now as DD will turn 6 months in a week so it seems pointless waiting. Desperately hoping things improve on their own...it's the night time nappies that are particularly testing.

@ananz07 Did the poop ever go back to normal? We are in the same boat: two teeth cut through a week ago but the nappies are still endless!

Hope things settle down for you soon @kisaki333 Flowers

Hi @kisaki333, sorry to hear you are in the same position. It is a rather testing time! I’m pleased to report that yes, things did calm down. The 24/7 dirty nappies did eventually stop after a few weeks on their own. Never identified the cause but my daughter is now completely back to normal and has 1-2 dirty nappies every other day or so. She is teething again now and another tooth has cut through but we haven’t had the same nappy problem (thank God!). Also wondering whether her gut has just developed more now. A friend said that, because my daughter teethed early, her stomach may not have been able to have coped with all the excess saliva which I thought was an interesting theory. Really hope things get better for you soon - hang in there!

Thanks, it's actually starting to improve for us as well. Yesterday and today i noticed significantly less dirty nappies. Fingers crossed it holds 😁

All in all, 3 weeks for 2 teeth ... sigh... so many more to go... But like you said maybe future ones will be easier due to age.
