Old chesnut but humour me - PFB moment

DD (10mo) has thus far been a dream to wean. Mashed foods and finger foods accepted with gusto since 5.5mo.

This afternoon she seemed hungry. I sat her down in front of a plate of egg mayo sandwiches, and crudites, a lunch she has enjoyed on 3 previous occasions.

Today she screamed at me, and threw it onto the table. I ignored this, ate mine, let her mash hers up with her fingers, and got her down without eating anything (one or two crumbs may have sneaked down, but very little else). She's crawled off to play with her blocks now.

So anyway, what is the accepted MN way of dealing with such stuff, without a) giving DD food ishooes and b) becoming DD's personal short order cook.

Ta .

Could she be teething?

PerkinWarbeck · 16/01/2008 12:15

Don't think so StealthPolarBear - we've had 7 teeth already and tend to know about it when they're on their way, IYKWIM .

Sounds like you handled it just fine. Just offer more milk if she acts hungry later.

ruddynorah · 16/01/2008 12:20

has she had egg before? egg is the only food dd would never ever eat and have a hissy fit with. then discovered it makes sense. babies avoid foods they may be intolerant to, and egg is actually not recommended for under 5s as whites are one of the most allergenic food around. apparently it's something to do with the size of the protein. but once baby is over 5 they are more able to process the size of this protein. does that vaguely make sense?!

StealthPolarBear · 16/01/2008 12:28

That's a pity, we had better get some new teeth in the next few days to justify DS's terrible eating and sleeping habits at the moment

PerkinWarbeck · 16/01/2008 12:31

thanks all

right, well she's just starting whingeing, so I have reoffered the egg sandwich debris that I neglected to clean away (MNing instead!). She is reluctantly chomping on a crust as she shuffles off .

just hoping this isn't the start of A Phase.

Although it would be just punishment for prior Weaning Smugness .

just ignore and offer milk, imo. it's only an egg sarnie. although ruddynorah may be onto something, dd refused raw toms long before it became apparent she had a wee intolerance to them.

SpongebobControlpants · 17/01/2008 14:58

I was about to start a thread about something similar-ish.

DD is 10 months, and likewise has happily had spoon-fed mashed stuff, plus various finger foods since 6 months. Am also guilty of Weaning Smugness!!

DD has also started throwing her food around a lot more now, and has taken to spitting it out. Which is confusing me - does she dislike it, or is it a phase? Today she happily chomped a pice of apple for about 20 mins, but spat all of it out as she went along!

DH does not like the spitting food out thing, and gets cross with her (he has 3 children already, and says she's not too young to be told it's wrong to spit out).

So, am also hoping for some pearls of wisdom as to what to do (if anything)....

EffiePerine · 17/01/2008 14:59

She may prefer to eat on the go (DS hates sitting down to eat, will ask to be lifted down then sneak a crust off the high chair table to chew on)

PerkinWarbeck · 17/01/2008 15:30

O Wise EP, I think you may be onto something. Given that bath and story now have to be done standing up, I might try lunch on the go at the weekend. It's nursery's problem until then .

Spongebob - sorry to hear you too are getting The Backlash.

dd has always refused egg, mayo, custard, etc. turns out that she is quite allergic to egg. as I still bf, I have cut egg out of my diet too and her skin is almost perfect now.

EffiePerine · 17/01/2008 15:38

It's not too bad untli they start getting obsessed with posting stuff in boxes - keep finding old crusts/bits of chewed food/apple cores in the most unlikely places

The worst was a half-sucked jelly baby (DH's fault! Nowt to do with me!) in his shapes box [shudder]

Ds ate loads between 5.5 and 12 months, some mush and lots of BLW-inspired foods, and I felt v. smug. Then the week he turned 1 he started to refuse pretty much everything .... I panicked (esp as he self-weaned at around same time, so no reassurance of lots of bm being enough) but everything I read said just keep offering him a variety of healthy stuff, don't make an issue of it, don't go searching for 3 or 4 alternatives if they refuse first one (the short order cook issue) and he'll eat when he's hungry and needs it. He just picked for months at whatever came out, but seemed fine and still reassuringly chunky, then suddenly, 4 months later, started eating everything in sight again and became a complete gannet! Think it was partly about growth / development - he's got much longer v. quickly and started to walk at same time.

I'd say trust her appetite and don't worry - it's the anxiety that passes on the food ishoos.
