Non constipating weaning foods

I started weaning DD on Monday and she hasn't pooped since Monday afternoon! She's usually once per day at least.

I know that introduction of solids can make them binged up, so I was wondering what foods do the opposite and help her go...

I give her about a teaspoon of porridge (if that) made with breastmilk in the morning and sometimes a little bit of banana for her to play with and for dinner around 5pm I've given her steamed carrot, pepper or courgette sticks or cucumber with the skin cut off (she tends to play with these, chew them and spit them out again, most ends up smeared over the high chair)

She's EBF the rest of the time and is feeding well.

Any suggestions for foods with a laxative effect?!

Thank you

I always have pouches of prune purée on standby. They are brilliant for helping little ones go. When we started weaning I would do prune purée every other day to help but now at 10.5 months my DD seems to not need the help anymore

Thanks @lilroo87

Do you buy the prune puree in the supermarket ie is it a baby food jar type thing, or do you make it yourself?

Avocado seems very effective.

Prune purée is readily available eg Ella’s Kitchen or supermarket own branded pouch. Banana will have the opposite effect.

lilroo87 · 23/06/2022 19:25

I don't bother faffing making it myself, I often get the ellas kitchen pouches as you can just use some of it and keep it in the fridge for 48 hours.

Pear, prune, papaya, avocado, blueberries (cut in half)

Definitely avoid banana and rice for a few days

You can try offering a sippy cup of water with solid foods as well

Id cut back a little with the weaning too @Pitstop1986 and just offer food once, in the morning for a few days. It might just be that her bowels are too immature at this stage to cope with food 3 times a day.

Things like strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower, melon & peaches are all fairly high in water and shouldn't bing her up.

i always mix prunes (just the weaning sachets) with my baby’s porridge for breakfast which seems to help him keep going regularly. Also we always offer sips of water with meals which I think helps too, I have noticed if I forget to give him any water he finds it harder to poo.

Stop the banana, give her some prune purée and introduce some variety.

*bung her up.

Thanks for all of your messages. We tried prunes and they worked a treat! (Although the washing machine didn't thank me when I deposited the clothes after her poop explosion! 🙈)

We scaled it back a little bit, then slowly reintroduced just little bits a bit at a time and everything seems fine now!
