My 5 month old super greedy !

jmb279 · 24/05/2022 07:32

We started weaning at 4 month, my baby is now 5 month and is so greedy!
he screams for food half an hour before due!
breakfast he has half a pouch of porridge & 6oz bottle.
lunch half pouch & 7oz bottle (sometimes a little fruit purée as he screams for more)
teatime half pouch & 7oz bottle (sometimes a little fruit purée as he screams for more)
supper 8oz bottle

I feel that he’s eating more than he should for his age but yet isnt enough !
any tips on how to help satisfy my baby?

He shouldn’t be eating any solid food at his age. Talk to your HV who will help you to get back on track.

dementedpixie · 24/05/2022 07:40

He's having an awful lot of food for a baby that wouldn't normally be eating solids. Can you offer more milk/another bottle

fyn · 24/05/2022 07:41

If he is hungry he needs more milk, not more food. Replacing milk with food will be making him
hungry.

rattlemehearties · 24/05/2022 07:43

He is hungry so give him milk on demand. Milk should be his main sustenance at his age so if he's hungry, feed him milk, don't wait until an arbitrary meal time.

I wonder where you live or what guidance you have read as this has been NHS guidance for nearly 30 years now.

Lazypuppy · 24/05/2022 07:44

There is far more calories in milk, how much milk is he having the rest of the day?

jevoudrais · 24/05/2022 07:44

Food has less calories than milk, he needs more milk.

R0tational · 24/05/2022 07:46

Greedy? Horrible word to use for a baby :(

ShirleyPhallus · 24/05/2022 07:50

Are you sure he’s screaming for more food and not due to discomfort? This is a lot of food for a baby who isn’t yet mean to be on solids

LittleBearPad · 24/05/2022 07:53

Give him another bottle if he’s hungry

ladydimitrescu · 24/05/2022 07:53

He's probably screaming because he's hungry - half a pouch is pointless compared to milk and won't fill him up.
It's also likely it's hurting his belly, as their stomachs aren't ready for food until 6 months.

He absolutely should not be having food instead of milk, milk is their main source of nutrients until 1. He is only 5 months old, he needs far more milk than he is being given.

romdowa · 24/05/2022 07:55

You need to give your baby larger bottles. My 7 month old has 3 meals a day and 5 9oz bottles.

Speak to your health visitor. Since when has advice been not to give solid food before 6 months? Mine all started on baby rice at 4 months. If a five month old baby is hungry and accepting solid food, carry on. That's obviously what he needs

The advice has been 6 months since at least about 2003/2004 as it changed just after my dd was born. Certainly was in place by 2006 as that's when ds was born and he weaned around 23 weeks.

Same1977 · 24/05/2022 08:35

Technically babies can be weaned from 4 months on although advised closer to 6 months.
The biggest change I'd suggest is feeding on demand instead of mealtimes as that is currently advised for babies .

fyn · 24/05/2022 08:57

@Georgeskitchen baby rice is dreadful for babies, producers in America have stopped making it all together because it was full of arsenic. Half of ‘safe’ baby rice sold in the UK exceeds the safe level of arsenic. It’s been shown to lead to cancers and learning delays.

Yep I agree

And processed meat is classifies as type 1 carcinogen...doesn't stop people sending their kids to school with ham sandwiches

MolliciousIntent · 24/05/2022 10:17

He's not getting nearly enough milk and his stomach is filling up with solids which have much fewer calories than milk. NHS guidelines say you shouldn't be giving babies 3 meals a day til 9m, and you shouldn't be dropping bottles til then either

VintageVest · 24/05/2022 10:17

Give him more milk. If you just do a web search on weaning you can find all the information you need, and you will see that literally no reputable source will tell you to start at 4 months.

Rainallnight · 24/05/2022 10:20

You really need to give him more milk. He’s SUCH a tiny baby, he has no idea when breakfast is ‘due’. Just give him milk when he’s hungry. And please go to your HV or childrens centre for advice about this. You need to get back on track.

Greenplantblue · 24/05/2022 10:20

He’s not greedy he’s a hungry baby. Give him more milk, more frequently. Less solids.

fyn · 24/05/2022 10:36

@Same1977 you do you, but babies bodies can’t get rid of arsenic. It has been proven to permanently reduce a child’s learning ability in addition to being a cancer risk. Nobody should be recommending feeding a four month old baby rice when there are safe alternatives. Also nobody is feeding a four month old ham.

I'm not disputing the science just pointing put that there are plenty of unsafe things parent are happy to do/give their kids.
Plus not sure what 4 month old is to do with it..should we be fine with giving carcinogenic food to older kids?

Caspianberg · 24/05/2022 10:41

I don’t think 4 bottles a day is very much. How long are you giving in between? I think the advice now is formula milk when they want it, not to a time schedule.

Ds breastfed but at 5 months was having a feed probably every 90mins-2hrs day and night. At 5 months we started some porridge, but he didn’t reduce any milk feeds.
I imagine a 5 month old on formula is usually on more like 6-7 bottles a day still, every 2-3 hours

vegang · 24/05/2022 10:47

He's not greedy, he's a baby. It's not recommended to wean at 4 months unless it's for medical reasons and he's definitely far too young to be having 3 meals a day? He needs more milk
