Paranoid about choking

My DS is 6 months are we are just starting weaning. We are in about week 3 (we started just after 5 1/2months with some babyrice. He is BF.

I am aware of a choking accident (cousin of a friend of a friend) that happened a toddler. I know that its nothing to do with BLW ... but this tragedy has given me an irrational fear of choking (my 3 1/2 year old is still only allowed cut up grapes)

I know that you all think that Ms K was talking a load of ol' rubbish but pls help me get over my fear.

DS has had purees so far but is rapidly starting to reject the veg. Personally I prefer the thought of BLW if I was brave enough as I think thats a great approach.

I was brave enough to give him a rice cake today which he loved and I can see he is desperate to feed himself. I know if he likes something when he tries to grab the spoon! When he doesn't like his veg he just sits there ... and the closed mouth soon follows.

So my question is at 6 months - apart from a rice cake what can a person who has a paranoia about choking be doing? I was thinking of steaming batons of veg rather than pureeing them for him, but then thought I should wait until he was about 8 or 9 months before giving him those.

Would welcome anyone's experiences at what a 6 month can handle. Thanks.

Hi, personally I think it depends on the LO. It is generally considered fine to give a 6mo finger food (and many BLW converts on here have given nothing but at that age). However, my DS struggled and gagged with finger food at that age, so I held off and didn't give him much in the way of finger foods til about 7.5mo. He didn't really get into eating solids (mash or finger food) in a big way til about 9mo.

If your LO is interested in finger food then that's a good sign he's ready, toast was the first food that DS really got to grips with, and very low chokability! The Organix carrot stick thingies are also good for nervous mums as they practically melt in the mouth.

Also we went through a rejection of veg stage a few weeks into weaning, I tore my hair out but just kept offering, and he became more interested when I introduced different textures and flavours like pasta in cheese sauce etc.

meg - thanks. helpful to know that the rejection of veg is not for life!

i think a gagging episode would really set me back so i will take it easy for now. thanks for ur 7.5 mo experience. really useful

I think it may be very different for different kids.
ds1 ate pieces of pineapple by 8-9 months.
I'm currently weaning ds2. As far as lumps go he has eaten one quarter of a rice cake and a small piece of paper (his selection) ever. At over 8 months he is only just beginning not to vomit every time when a crumb tries to go down, although very interested in trying things (especially paper).
