Just out of interest BF and 'large babies'

DD was 10 and a half pounds when born and is still on the 91st centile. At present I am still exclusively BF her and intend to do so until 6 months. However all too often I hear that as she is big she may need more than milk earlier. I also hear that this is rubbish - so what were your experiences?

an oft-touted myth

the silly thing is that mothers with small babies are told just the same thing

NoIHaventChangedMyName · 09/01/2008 12:14

so unless you're baby is on the 50th centile wean early?!

CarGirl · 09/01/2008 12:15

Mine were 10lb6, 9lb2, 9lb10 and were all fully bf until 6 months (ie no food!) they all slept through the night too. So it's a coplete myth.

Belive me 5 years ago the pressure I got from the HV to wean early was immense but she didn't really eat food in quantities until she was 10 months.

Brangelina · 09/01/2008 12:17

It is a load of tosh. My friend's DS was right off the scale in terms of weight and she was told to bfeed excl until 6 months so as to offset any possibility of obesity and to continue bfeeding him up to at least a year for the same reason.
My neighbour's DD had about 4 chins she was so chubby and her paed even suggested holding off solids until 7 months.
Equally, my baby was a slow gainer and I was told to avoid solids before 6 months as they had a lower calorie content than milk.

ladymuckingitup · 09/01/2008 12:21

Mine was 8lb 9oz when she was born, and got bigger & bigger just on breastmilk till she was on the 98th centile. She had nothing but breastmilk till she was 6 months and was completely fine. I can't claim she slept through the night, but I don't really think it had anything to do with hunger. More to do with me putting up with 'bad' habits.
So I think it's rubbish and I expect you will know anyway when the right time comes to wean.

Flibbertyjibbet · 09/01/2008 12:31

My tall but very skinny 7lb 10oz ds1 weaned at 25 weeks when it became apparent he needed it.
DS2 was 9lb and fed 20 hours a day for weeks. Not chubby, just tall and wide shoulders etc. I thought he'd be ready for solids sooner than 6m so started trying it at 24 weeks but he just pushed the little taster amounts out of his mouth till 27 weeks when he started eating us out of house and home and hasn't stopped since!

So I would say tosh too - readiness for solids doesn't appear to have any relation to birth weight or chunkiness.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 09/01/2008 12:36

my DS was a big kid. 8.14 when he was born and put on up to a pound a week for ages.
he didn't really truly start eating until he was 18months. (he was BF) now he won't stop.
whenever we go out i have to have a farking picnic with me.

moondog · 09/01/2008 12:37

Yeah, it's complete crap.

snottyshoulders · 09/01/2008 12:42

If she's on the 91st percentile, she's obviously getting enough or her weight would be dropping, and people would be on at you to add milk! Good for you bfing, carry on, you know best when to wean

ReverseThePolarity · 09/01/2008 12:43

Lol at weaning early unless your baby is on 50th centile.

Yes, if your baby is bigger than that, then they need extra calories and will need topping up / weaning early.

If your baby is smaller than that, then they're starving and will need topping up / weaning early.

Seems to be a pattern...

Notyummy · 09/01/2008 12:45

Another 'rubbish' from me. DD was 9lbs at birth (not as big as some of the whoppers on here!), but was a good feeder and never dropped below the 91st centile. Fully breastfed up to six months, and slept through (with a 1030pm dreamfeed) from 10 weeks onward. She wasn't particularly intereed in food, but we tried her at 26 weeks and she gradually took to it.

I think generally your body is equipped to feed the size of the baby you give birth to (putting aside issues of pain/difficulty in bf, which I fully acknowledge may be a reason for not doing it) and if you are successful in establishing bf, then size should not be the reason for weaning.

Cali · 09/01/2008 12:46

It's rubbish, DD1 was a similar weight and MW told me that she would need lots of milk and I would be feeding her all the time if I just BF'd!!!!!
Didn't start weaning until she was nearly 6 months old and only stopped BF when she was 20 months.

NoIHaventChangedMyName · 09/01/2008 15:20

no bf is going well really. not sleeping through by any stretch (although she was at one point ) and drooling due to teeth. I have no plans at present to wean before 6 months. Its nice to have this thread to look at to say it should be ok!! Her weight has dropped slightly from 98th at birth to 91st but I'm not concerned. Am looking forward to doing battle with the nursery nurse if its dropped anymore!!!

JodieG1 · 09/01/2008 15:21

Rubbish my ds2 put on weight really quickly and I bf him for 6 months without weaning and he didn't need anything else.

Plus if they are hungry more milk is better as it has momre calories

ChubbyShcotsBurd · 09/01/2008 15:26

Rubbish, DS is on 91st centil and have offered food at 24 weeks - it's all just a game, he'd rather have a BF if he's hungry. To all the older female relatives, to the HV and nursery nurses, whoever - he's not doing bad on the milk so where's the hurry?!

puffylovett · 09/01/2008 15:27

Agree with everyone else rubbish - DS 8lb 6 at birth 91st centile from 2 weeks old and has never budged. Was under pressure from family to wean at 4 mths when he STILL wasn't sleeping through like he SHOULD have been (wtf !) but held out till 24 weeks then started BLWing.

For the record, he never ingested much food till he was about 7.5 months, he's now 10 months and has spurts of eating everything he can lay his hands on & spurts of eating nothing at all, and he STILL doesn't sleep through like he SHOULD

u do what u feel is right for your LO love

ChubbyShcotsBurd · 09/01/2008 15:29

[gasp] at puffylovett's abnormal baby, not slleping through at 4 months

NoIHaventChangedMyName · 09/01/2008 16:22

this is good! I thought there would at least be some people with He/she was too big!!

HollyIsAHippopotamus · 09/01/2008 16:40

Garbage!!

My ds was 10lb 8 oz at birth and is now 6 1/2 months and I am just really starting to wean him now. He has pretty much stayed on the same centile since birth and is very tall and a little bit chubby!!

I had an HV tell me to "start weaning in ernest" when he was 5 months. I just ignored her! Silly woman!

He wasn't sleeping through the night before I started giving him solids and he still isn't now, so it makes no difference!

Chaotica · 09/01/2008 16:51

DD was huge (99th centile height, 75th weight) and exclusively breastfed to 5 months she really did seem to start getting hungry (waking every hour in the night and wanting a feed when previously she'd slept through), and she went back to normal sleep once solids were introduced. (Bf to 14 months though). DS is even huger (99th centile height, 91st weight) and only 3m don't plan to wean earlier than 6m, I'm going to see how it goes. (Oddly DS is less hungry than his sister -- maybe he's just more efficient.)

TellusMater · 09/01/2008 16:53

DD was 99.6th centile for length and weight. Exclusively breastfed for nearly 7 months no bother at all (in fact it was 7 months not 6 because I forgot to start weaning).

MrsJohnCusack · 09/01/2008 19:37

DS 10lbs 5 at birth and exclusively breastfed until over 6 months (again, forgot to start weaning). still big now at 10 months and eating us out of house and home

as MrsBadger says, the same thing is oftern recommended for small babies too.

complete balls

Habbibu · 09/01/2008 20:00

Pretty much the same as TellusMater. DD 10lb 11oz at birth (am I winning so far in the crazy big baby stakes?), breastfed merrily for 6 months, remained on 99.6th centile for everything until about 12 months when her weight started to plateau. I was told that too, and cheerfully ignored it as I was in no hurry to start weaning! Did BLW at 6 months and she loved it.

What a load of tosh - DD is on 99th percentile and is still bf at 14 months (obv with solids too now though).
