Baby constipated after introducing cows milk

Please help

Since birth my son has been on sma formula.

My son is a week away from turning 1 years old so I decided to stop formula and started giving him whole cows milk 2 days ago for all his bottle feeds (he has one bottle in the day and around 2-3 during the night).

However since I started giving him cows milk 2 days ago he's been really constipated. Tonight was the worst because poor thing was crying for 30 mins to try push out a poo. I had a look and a hard poo was stuck there so I tried taking it out with my fingers but it didn't work. Finally I say him in a tub or warm water and it finally came out. I felt so bad for him. Otherwise he's been himself eg. No vomiting or any other concerning symptoms. He also eats well and has a balanced diet.

So I read online that it can be normal for babies to be constipated after introducing cows milk whilst their bodies adjust to digesting it but I don't know what to do/scared he won't adjust to it.

So I feel like these are my options:

  • Continue with cows milk and wait for him to adjust
  • dilute the cows milk with 1-2 ounce water
  • do half cows milk and half formula
  • stop cows milk al together and continue with formula for another month or 2

Could really use some advice/anyone who has experienced similar and what did you do?

Poor guy! I did the dilution method to get body used to the cows milk. So think 30ml cow and 180ml formula, then every few days or a week up the ratio to more cow less formula! It's not such a hard hit on their digestive system.
Plus have a sippy cup with water always on hand. Pears also help with constipation!
