I would not because of the salt but you can buy very low salt cubes. I got some Vegetable ones from Waitrose and they are fine if cooking for the whole family. If you are just cooking a batch for DD I would not bother as she won't know the difference!

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 02/01/2008 20:54

Depends - have you checked the salt content? I can't imagine that there would be that much, if it's in a recipe for, say, 4 people - but definitely worth checking.

lulurose · 02/01/2008 20:54

If used spareingly I think it should be ok, I think you can get low salt stock cubes though.

lionbeast · 02/01/2008 20:54

also when i normally make rissotto one day i make a roast dinner [chicken]
then hte next day i use the left overs to make a rissotto or whatever

never made me or dh ill
but is it best not to do this with dd?

just cook with more wine and herbs and ditch the oxo until the last few minutes. you can take out your baby's and let it cool while everyone else's is bubbling. it's best to be cautious with salt... in fact it's best to take the opportunity to wean yourself off it.

lionbeast · 02/01/2008 20:56

does anyone know where i can get low salt stock cubes ? is waitrose the best bet ?

OP posts:
PanicPressiePants · 02/01/2008 20:56

No, I wouldn't. Actually I wouldn't use them in any cooking at all due to the salt and other additives in them. BUT you can use things like herbs and spices to give taste to your cassaroles.

lionbeast · 02/01/2008 20:57

oh thats a good idea, although dont think it would work with rissotto lol

what about eating chicken the next day ?

OP posts:
PanicPressiePants · 02/01/2008 20:57

Honestly you're cooking will taste much nicer if you DON't use them. Horrible artificial things!

CantSleighWontSleigh · 02/01/2008 20:57

Kallo low salt stock cubes is your best bet (though only available in veg I believe).

Fine to use leftovers to make something the next day IMO.

MrsCarrot · 02/01/2008 20:57

I wouldn't. Haven't oxo cubes got MSG in them, or they used to have anyway? Like Aitch says, take theirs out first.

Aitch · 02/01/2008 20:57

they taste cack, imo. sorry.

lionbeast · 02/01/2008 20:57

what and make up some kind of herby water ? to use in a casserole?

OP posts:
lionbeast · 02/01/2008 20:59

i was just a bit weary esp with chicken and dd is only 6 months

OP posts:
CantSleighWontSleigh · 02/01/2008 20:59

Actually if you're doing a roast chicken the day before, boil it up to make your own stock. Definitely much nicer.

MrsCarrot · 02/01/2008 20:59

You can also get low salt Bouillon from health food shops and some supermarkets.

Aitch · 02/01/2008 20:59

what wouldn't work with risotto? bayleaf, white wine and some home-made stock from some bay, celery, onion, garic and carrots? easy-peasy.

Kallo do low salt organic stock cubes. Available in most large supermarkets or your local health food shop may have them or be able to order them in. One day I will get organised and make my own stock.

Be careful though, they may be lower salt but still contain a proportion of salt which you may not want to risk.

lionbeast · 02/01/2008 21:00

hey myjob
ive got you in my other window
how are you ?

OP posts:
PanicPressiePants · 02/01/2008 21:00

A can of tomatoes, onions, garlic, tomato puree, mixed herbs etc will make a lovely cassorle base. You can add corn flour to thicken, or different herbs/spices for different sorts of flavours depending on your meat. Can add red or white wine etc etc.

CantSleighWontSleigh · 02/01/2008 21:00

I got 10 litres of stock from my Christmas turkey .

Aitch · 02/01/2008 21:01

yes, or like csws says make chicken stock, yum.
stock cubes makke everything taste the same, imo. particularly that marigold bouillon (am partial to a bit of knorr chicken cube, having said that, but not much of it, and dd is 2).

if you cut down on salt your arteries will thank you for it.

onepieceoflollipop · 02/01/2008 21:01

x-post cantsleighwontsleigh. at least I know I am not alone in using them! Maybe a N Y resolution to stop using them in the Lollipop household.

lionbeast · 02/01/2008 21:02

oh yes tell me how i make this homemade stock sounds perfect
how do i do
put it all in the pan and boil it up
