Hi summerfruit

DD was the same at that age, although she did love her readybrek. We just kept offering her finger foods and that seemed to help her confidence with lumpier food. Can't offer too much advice as the nursery did a lot of the work for us! Just perserve I guess. Hope someone more expert will be along soon.

is she gagging or choking? there is a difference....

TheOldestCat · 02/01/2008 14:44

um... persevere rather than perserve.

oh dear, that must be really worrying. if you do a search on here, you might find more advice. you are certainly not the only mum who has had issues with getting their DC to eat lumpy food.

hope you get some answers. sorry to not be more help.

don't take this the wrong way, but could you be over-reacting or is she actually turning blue and fighting for breath? what's she like with finger food? (because sometimes babies who are gaggy with lumps and purees are better with whole food because they dont' try to suck it back like milk).

Just be careful not to overeact when she starts to gag - remember she doesn't know it is scary unless you teach her it is, by attempting to rescue her each time. I try to show praise and encouragement when my 8 month old attempts a lump (she isn't keen either!)so she knows lumps are ok, they are normal and not scary. Mind, she won't open her mouth for more though!

I also second the finger foods idea, let her have control over what she puts in her mouth. Soggy toast and whole bananas are great.
