14 months old 99 percentile for weight. Am I over feeding?

Claptone · 09/01/2022 20:01

My DS weight is creeping up and has been since he started on solids.

He was born 50th percentile height and weight. From 6 months he jumped up to 91st and now at 14 months has jumped up to 99th for weight. Height has remained the same, slightly less in fact.

His head size is on the 99th percentile of that makes a difference. I would be grateful for some advice on whether I am overfeeding.

Typical day

B. Potato waffle and an egg or banana. Half slice of toast and a small yoghurt

6oz milk for nap

Lunch. Pasta and sauce with veg. Kiwi

Dinner. Cottage pie and a small yoghurt

Snacks breadstick, Satsuma

6oz milk before bed

Thank you x

So for breakfast he could have a potato waffle, an egg, half a piece of toast (presumably with butter and / or a topping) and a small yogurt. That seems like a lot of calories for a baby (95 in the waffle, 70 in the egg, 75 for the bread with butter, and about 45 for a small yogurt (P'tit filous size).
For the other meals, it's hard to say without knowing the portion size.
One year olds need about 1,000 calories a day. If he's having about 300 for breakfast and then about 120 in the formula milk, I'd say it's quite likely he's overeating unless dinner and lunch portions are small.
Perhaps you could ask HV for advice?

cloudtree · 09/01/2022 20:38

That’s a lot of good imo.

cloudtree · 09/01/2022 20:38

*food not “good”

PlasticCupPolitics · 09/01/2022 20:43

It’s a hard to say whether or not that’s too much food as we have no idea of the portion sizes.

However, it would concern me that your child is rising up through the centiles, if they were born on 91st and were now 99th I wouldn’t bat an eyelid. I work in health visiting and I’d want to make a plan to come back and weigh again to ensure they didn’t continue to move up the centiles. It is worth speaking to your HV if you haven’t already - it might even just be that your scales are wrong.

It sounds a lot of food, he's having three cooked meals a day.

Philandbill · 09/01/2022 20:47

How active is he? Is he crawling / cruising / walking yet?

thebigpurpleone · 09/01/2022 20:50

Potato waffle and an egg or banana. Half slice of toast and a small yoghurt

Do you mean he has all this for breakfast?

allofthecheese · 09/01/2022 20:51

Breakfast sounds like a lot. The rest seems ok but really depends on portion size.

WalkingOnSonshine · 09/01/2022 20:55

My 12 month old eats very similar sized portions, often a fourth cooked meal after nursery, but he doesn’t stop moving from the moment he wakes up.

He’s constantly running & climbing, so burns a lot off. He’s about 75th centile & still breastfeeding so no idea how much milk he gets.

newnamenewyear · 09/01/2022 20:56

He doesn't need formula at 14 months.

Follow on milks are just a marketing ploy.

I'd cut the milk out.

FWIW, DS is above the 99th percentile too, but has been since a few weeks old (he was 95th at birth) and is 99th for height and weight. That's just the way he is.

But if your DS is 50th for height and 99th for weight, then that seems out of proportion, doesn't it?

newnamenewyear · 09/01/2022 20:57

Sorry, I should have said - replace the milk with cow's milk and water, not just drop it entirely!

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/01/2022 21:01

That’s a lot of food for breakfast

The rest is hard to tell without knowing portion size.

Now is about the time to knock of milk, so I’d do that, one bottle at a time. And then reduce breakfast to waffle and egg OR toast and yogurt. Do it gradually.

Some where along the way see a health visitor to get their opinion.

Claptone · 09/01/2022 21:04

Thanks for response.

Typo in breakfast. Egg and a potato waffle OR a banana, yoghurt and half slice of toast.

Other meal portions maybe 3-4 tablespoons.

I'll drop the formula. I was only using as it was easy for me at night but he started sleeping through recently.

He is constantly moving when awake but crawling and cruising mostly. He only started walking yesterday.

Hopefully that plus the above changes will help.

How mobile is he OP? My DS was 97th centile by 6 months (born on the 9th Confused) as he breastfed near constantly. Has always loved his food and has stayed on the 97th ever since. He was a huge blob of a baby at 14 months. He’s still quite chunky at 20 months but looks far less ‘fat’ then he used to - he only walked and 15 months and now he runs all the time and it’s slimmed out his torso and his legs a fair amount.

bassackwards · 09/01/2022 21:27

OP I noticed my DC got really chunky just before she started walking properly at 14-15 months. After that she sort of evened out a bit

newnamenewyear · 09/01/2022 23:38

Same with DS, once he started walking his shape changed and his chunky baby folds disappeared.

Congratulations baby Claptone on the walking! Star

Thank you xxx

Agree with the others that he might slim down a bit now he's walking abs it's worth stopping the formula and giving 300 ml (10floz) of full fat cow's milk a day.

The Caroline Walker Trust has a good guide on portion sizes here which might be useful Smile

Claptone · 09/02/2022 06:43

Just thought I'd update on my now typical day for my toddler.

It been like this for a few weeks, he's flying around now and climbing EVERYTHING. Still 99% percentile weight but has creeped up to between 50th and 75th for height.

Hope I'm on the right track with his food now.... always happy to take more advice if not x

Small kids banana
Dessert spoon of Greek yoghurt
His size handful of dry cheerios

5 spoons veggie pasta
Portion of fruit

Boiled egg, slice toast & a portion of fruit

Another small banana before bed

15oz whole milk over 24 hours. Plenty of water.

I would offer more vegetables. Also, are you offering whole fruits (e.g. apples slices or satsuma segments) or the baby jar/pouch type of thing? I would switch to whole fruit. Make one snack a savory one. Hummus and cucumbers is good. Another thought would be to replace some of the milk by wholemilk yoghurt. I am suggesting this because he would practice eating with a spoon
His appetite will likely vary, but he seems a good eater. Take advantage and introduce some new foods, especially vegetables and maybe fish.

CatRatSplat · 27/02/2022 20:49

That many bananas is far too many that's 4 portions a day, even kid size ones. A portion is what fits in a childs hand. The second banana will be empty calories, swap to 1 portion of another fruit or veg and the first should only be a portion too.

The rest sounds good.
