He's 6 months and he will suck pear, melon, carrot and banana, but won't take purees. He seems to be getting nothing from this except a bit of juice though and I'm worried about him not getting enough nutrients. My hv says I need to push the feeding as his 6 month store of iron etc is gone.

Last night I gave him some carrot sticks and this morning I noticed (sorry for this!!), big lumps of carrot in his nappy!! I didn't think he had actually eaten anything. Anyway is this normal? There was so much that he can't actually have digested anything

iron stores start to deplete around this age, they don;t suddenly vanish at 6 months.

is your son still having lots of milk? milk should be the main source of nutrition for the first year, with food a complement to that, rather than a replacement, especially so soon into weaning.

there is no hurry to get him on 3 meals a day..try iron rich foods if you are concerned, broccoli, spinach , apricots...

Sounds like he's working to the script

Any number of people will tell you - they start off sucking and gnawing bits off, you find recognisable pieces in the nappy, then suddenly at about 9-10 months you start finding proper poos.

And as Lulumama says, milk is the place for nutrients. Now is the time to practise with the food. The actual amount going in and being digested isn't something to worry about for ages yet.

Yes, as Lulumama says, milk is still the main source of nutrients. And calories of course - ounce for ounce breast milk is more calorific than the majority of solid foods (& would imagine same is true of formula too).

If your HV does your head in about BLW you could do what I did; stop going.

Ok I'll try to chill about it!

My hv is a bit of a know it all and to be honest, I usually ignore her advice.
