Starting weaning- quantities?

My little one just turned 6 months old so we're starting to wean (I mean literally just started today). I'm really not sure about quantities of things though. Today we started with baby rice and I read to begin with you just do 1-2 teaspoons but she definitely wanted more. Probably gonna try a single veg puree tomorrow but I'm not sure how much to give- do they always stop eating when they need to or do some babies just keep eating until they're sick?!

I do have the solid starts app and follow a couple of insta accounts but they never really seem to mention quantities. Also do I just start with 1 meal a day?

I'm a bit apprehensive about everything because she seems to have a sensitive stomach and dairy intolerance so I don't want to aggravate things. We've already had an explosive poo after the baby rice today!

Sorry so my question is, how do you best judge quantities?!

Ditch the baby rice anyway, it has no nutritional value. Normal porridge would be much better.

It's tough to judge quantities because each baby will want a different amount. Just trial and error, if she wants more give her more.

Start small. One or two spoonfuls, see how she goes and take it from there

Baby will tell you when they don’t want any more. Stick with one type of food for a few days to look out for allergies.
1 meal a day then work up to 2 then 3 and then it will be 3 meals with 2 snacks a day.
It’s mostly about discovering new flavours and textures until its about nutrition.

The nhs website has some good weaning info- there’s a website too

www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning/

Ellas kitchen has a good weaning chart(free in the post) that gives portion size guidelines

Weaning can be and should be fun. Be ready for the mess!

Yeah I only used baby rice as the first 'meal' as its the blandest thing available, just wanted to see how her stomach would be after having something that isn't breast milk! I tasted it myself and its horrible. Moving onto veg/porridge next.

I know every baby will be different but surely there is an average quantity? Eg if I make carrot puree how much carrot would I use? Eventually I'm planning on batch making purees and freezing anyway, but would be good to get an idea of how much to offer in one sitting?

@Danikm151 thank you, yes the NHS site is fab but doesn't mention really mention portion sizes, I'll check out the free Ella's chart though thank you!

Have you taken a look at baby led weaning?

PanicBuyingSprouts · 28/12/2021 13:24

This guide gives some ideas on portion sizes abs also has some great suggestions for first foods Smile

@Garman yes, but I'm planning to start with a mix of the two. DD is a funny one as she's hit all the usual milestones for weaning and is fascinated when she sees us eating...but she's never really been one to put objects in her mouth except for her hands. She'll inspect things and hold them but it's like it doesn't occur to her to put them in her mouth, maybe with food it will be different though, will experiment with both.

It's absolutely fine to offer finger foods along with mashed (she probably does need smooth purées at 6 months) Smile

Try offering something like lightly steamed broccoli florets on her high chair tray whilst you get her dinner ready abs are what she does Prost probably throw them in the floor for the dog to eat

My LO is 6 months and just started weaning. I do homemade purees and freeze them in ice cube trays before popping out into freezer bags. I find that she’s only needing one defrosted cube at the moment. Today I gave her one cube of broccoli alongside a floret to try too.
