i was told by hv on friday that she eating too much, putting on weight too quickly and needs at least 20 oz of milk each day! i have tried doing exactly what the hv suggested bottle for beakkie, takes me at least an hour to get the full 9 oz's into her, full portion of main course and half portion of dessert for lunch followed by small bottle! she wont touch the bottle and cries when it goes in her mouth! main course for dinner with no dessert just a bottle but she wont have the bottle and bottle for supper can manage to get about 3 oz's into her! the last two nights i have given her fruity rice pud after her supper bottle as i am concerned that she is going to bed with nothing in her!

she sleeps very well and hasnt woken for food since she was about six weeks old so it seems a very long time for her to be going without food!

has anyone else had this problem and is there any other foods she could have that would help subsitute the milk? i know how important it is that she has the milk but even when she is hungry she wont have the milk

Have you tried to give her some milk in a beaker? maybe the teat is hurting her mouth or she doesn't like the taste of the teat anymore.
Do any of the MW or HV on here ever advise cutting down on foods?
Could she have developed an intolerance/ dislike of milk?

micci25 · 19/12/2007 22:25

i think that it is a dislike of the milk as she wont have baby cereal with baby milk either but seems not to mind rusks with baby milk although she only has these occasionally as i dont want her getting used to sugary foods

What an odd thing for hv to say!!How old is dd?How does she work out she is eating too much??

Babies will drink what they need so don't feel pressured to get 20 0z into her.

Have you tried water as an alternative or very dilute fruit juice if she isn't a big milk fan?As long as she is getting a balanced diet with milky products such as yoghurt/fromage frais/cheese etc and maybe some milk morning and night if you can get it into her.Oh,and custard/milky desserts .My db was never a big milk fan and mum used to hide it by doing stuff like scrambled egg,pancakes,white/cheese sauces so he was getting milk but in a different form IYKWIM.If she is used to a beaker I would put her milk in that, she may not like the "feel" of a bottle IYKWIM.

she loves her food and adores yogurts, custard, cheese sauces etc but the health visitor was worried about her getting enough vitiman a and d apparently they get most of this from milk!

she takes juices okay from a bottle so i dont think it is that but maybe the novelty of a beaker might help so i might try that one!

she has a very varied diet and there is hardly any thing that she doesnt like! she has went down on her weight chart due to illness but has jumped straight back up again! the going down was gradual over 6 weeks but has jumped back to where she started in two weeks! in the last two weeks she has put on nearly two pounds! i think it is the rate at which she was gaining weight that worried the hv!

she told me she would end up obese if she carries on this way so i have cut back on her food intake which used to consist of 5-6 7 month baby jars or equivalant portions if she was having fresh! but she seemed more concerned about the milk but i just cant get it into her!

Sounds jUST like my DS. He is 11 months and has NEVER liked milk.

I weaned at 15 weeks due to lack on interest in milk. He LOVES his food but has been having about 5oz formula per day since he was 7 months and that is it.

I ensure his diet is varied with PLENTY of dairy i.e. yoghurts, cheese, custard and give him full fat milk on his cereal in the morning.

Try not to worry too much. If their diet is varied and full of fruit, veg, meat and lentils plus the dairy she will be fine.

I have come to the conclusion that some children don't like milk.

My DS has dilute fruit juice in his beaker to ensure his fluid intake is kept up.

HTH!

she always liked her milk untill we weaned at about five months on advise from hv and i must admit submitting to pressure from gradparents insisting that she must need more than that, we used to wean at 3 months, so and so did it at 4 months etc. i would have preffered to wait till 6 months but she seems to have taken really well to food!

she does get loads of dairy custard, rice pud and cheesy veg are her faves and loads of fruit and veg! maybe you are right and i shouldnt worry!

I think your hv is being a bit ott TBH.She could be on a growth spurt and settle down soon.If she is having quite a few jars of food she may not feel thirsty.IIRC mone would have weetabix for brekky with a mashed banana, then a jar eqiuvalent for lunch and a yoghurt or fruit. Then a jar equivalent for tea and a pudding and some fruit.Plus what milk they would take and I offered water/dilute juice with meals.By a year they had definitely calmed the eating down A bit

If she is having yoghurts etc etc these should also have the vits that milk has in them xxxxxx

micci25 · 19/12/2007 22:57

yeah she loves yogurts my dd1 has to hide hers when she eats them or dd2 will start to cry and grab for them untill dd1 lets her have a bit!!

i dont think its that she is not hungry as i have tried giving her the milk the first but she just keeps crying untill she gets the food! i think maybe she just doesnt like the milk!

it confused me i thought that you got most of your vits from fruiut and veg which she eats loads of?! when my dd1 was underweight they seemed to focus more on getting food into her not milk!

i feel at the moment like nothing i do is good enough for the hv's and i should just do what i feel is right! but then i get worried about depriving her from essential nutrients and her getting so fat she cant learn to walk!!

they were always concerned about dd1's weight being too low and she is a v poor eater and v skinny but she is active and happy so i dont feel there is a problem there anymore but her doc's disagree and insist i try and feed her fatty foods which she just doesnt like
