Just so confused about cups

I’m so confused about what sort of cup my 12 month old should be using. He’s been using a basic tommee tippee sippy cup since 6 months but now I’ve read they can impede speech development so now I’m really worried we done some lasting damage :( In terms of what we should be using I’m confused about all the terminology… straw cup? Weighted straw cup? Free flow? Aargh! We have just tried an open cup a few times but it’s just not happening at the moment so we need an alternative. Help! Just tell me what to buy!!

You could try a really tiny open cup so when they spill it they don't spill much?

Swearwolf · 06/12/2021 20:51

I never heard that about the tommee tippee ones, both of mine used them. Maybe try one of those 360 ones?

I would get a selection of open plastic ones and have different ones throughout the week.

Don't worry too much about specific brands/designs as they will need to learn to use handles, wider cups, little mugs, use straws etc they need to know how to use them all.

My advice is a few little open ones without lids, tiny bit of water in them and if they spill "oh dear, careful". And and carry on.

They won't want to spill water on themselves it will be annoying for them but that's how they learn. A few weeks of them spilling and they soon get the hang of it. But the bullet and go lidless.

Tommee ones are free flow but I too find the advice confusing.

edgeware · 06/12/2021 21:22

Just use a few different types so they get used to different ones. Speech development- this sounds like utter nonsense; get that out of your head. As if your child has a cup in their mouth all the time!!

JazzyBBG · 06/12/2021 21:25

Mine used those cups until at least 3. It didn't I assure you affect their speech. They never shut up since uttering their first word at 6 months!

Basic tommee tippee is a freeflowing cup so they are ok to use. You get a larger version too I think. Can be used with the lid off as well

We use 360 cups

Bootoagoose123 · 07/12/2021 14:10

We have the tumtum cup (weighted straw cup without a valve) which is great and then the doidy cup and some mini little baby cups. I try to give her a different one each meal but some are def more successful than others!

Babyiskickingmyribs · 07/12/2021 14:50

My toddler knows perfectly well how to drink from an open cup. He also really enjoys watching the water splash onto the floor when he tips it upside down. So I do use those 360 cups as well as open ones. Anything that isn’t straight water (mostly cows milk but also the occasional diluted juice) goes in a 360 cup. Water With meals I’ll put a tiny amount at a time in an open plastic cup and mop it up straight away when he inevitably tips it over. Water between meals I give in a 360 cup again because I don’t want a soaking wet sofa/bed/carpet all the time.

This is why I’m confused…! I read that anything with a hard spout is bad but free flow is good so the tommee tippee ones tick one box but not the other. Whereas things like the munchkin 360 are spoutless but not free flow??

Right, I’m sticking with the TT ones for now but also gonna try and accelerate open cup use as much as poss as I know ultimately that’s the end goal.

Just don’t know where straw cups come in…

We stuck with the tommee tippee sippy type (had unbranded version too) for going out where it mattered if spilt.

Then used simple open cups where it mattered less if spilt. He got the hang of them fast and now uses those nearly all the time and has done since he was around 1 can't remember exactly when (he has sippy cup at playgroup as we needed something with a lid). We used to drink out of his cup in front of him so he copied us.

Don't think anything more complicated necessary at all. I wasted money buying a couple but never used.

My son is now nearly 3 and has no idea what to do when he is given a straw but I don't think it matters...

Hard spout is ok. Its the cups with valves that aren't as good.

We used TT for out and about and sleepy milk feeds but tried open cups with a little bit of water at meal times. If they aren't continually drinking it wont affect speech.
