13 Months Old - Too Much Dairy?

Is there such a thing as too much dairy for a 13 month old? I thought we were fine then I was taking to a couple of mums at toddlers and they were shocked at how much DS eats 😬 here’s what he eat for a couple of days this week. Does it seem balanced enough? 🤔 They commented that he was having at least a cup too much dairy 😳

Day 1:
Wake up - cup of warm cows milk (6oz)
An hour later - 1 weetabix with raspberries and blackberries made with cows milk
Snack - chopped grapes & blueberries
Lunch - homemade lentil soup with bread them some natural yoghurt
Snack - sugarsnaps & sticks of pepper with hummus
Dinner - homemade chicken & mushroom casserole (white sauce) with potatoes & broccoli
Before bed - cup of warm cows milk (6oz)

Day 2
Wake up - cup of warm cows milk (6oz)
An hour later - porridge with blueberries and cows milk
Snack - banana
Lunch - cheese and avocado quesadilla with baby tomatoes and cucumber sticks
Snack - mango fingers & a breadstick with hummus
Dinner - homemade spaghetti bolognese (filled with veggies)
Before bed - cup of warm cows milk (6oz)

He’s hungry on waking but won’t touch breakfast for a wee while, hence not just giving a cup of milk along with breakfast. He eats/drinks whatever amount he wants. Sometimes leaves something on his plate, other times he eats everything.

I'd ignore them. At that age they let you know when they want milk.

Should also mention, obviously he gets water too 🤣

Tbh that sounds pretty in line with what I gave my DS at a similar age. From what I read dairy and fat are really important at that stage and your little one sounds like they're getting a healthy mix to me

rrhuth · 19/11/2021 07:21

Are their children still bf? If so they perhaps have bf not cow's milk morning and night? In which case it would seem a lot.

So long as you are in line with current feeding advice then you're ok.

I thought you were going to say that he was still having 4 bottles!

All of this sounds fine to me Smile

@teekay88 @SleafordSods @rrhuth Thanks everyone 😊 I hadn’t doubted it at all until they mentioned it 😅 I thought he ate quite well!
Both theirs were definitely FF from birth so not still BF. I can’t remember exactly what they said theirs get in a day but it was something along the line of milk in cereal, 2 petit filous yoghurts, and a cup before bed but it was definitely less than my wee chunks 6oz cup - maybe about 4oz!

The NHS recommend 10 floz of full fat cows milk a day so I'd say your DF's DC might not be getting enough.

@SleafordSods Thanks 😊 the recommendations I’d seen online vary from 10-12oz. He’s definitely having more than that by the time you factor in milk in cooking etc but it seems to be fine for him so I’ll keep going like that for now 🤷🏻‍♀️ I can’t remember exactly how much the mums at toddlers said their kids get but I’m pretty sure it was just what I’ve listed there 🤔 so yeah, might not actually be enough as you say!

You know your baby. This sounds very similar to what my son ate at this age. He’s nearly 3 now and he’s not eating that much more than this, he’s a slim and tall boy. He was bigger baby at 13 months and he loved all the dairy! A song as his tummy is ok then this sounds great!

This always makes me anxious. My 2 have never been milk drinkers. Hardly drink more than 2oz a day. No, am not kidding. I've tried every thing I could think of. They don't care much for cheese and only ear yogurt occasionally. No help from NHS (no surprise there) op, I think you are doing well. I've seen one year olds who eat almost 4 times that amount. Now that would make me go oh! but I wouldn't mention it to their parents

@Rno3gfr thanks 😊 DS is definitely a bigger baby too. He was born on 91st centile and settled just below that. He’s been an amazing eater since the start of weaning and just loves his food! Tummy seems fine - goes usually twice a day, pretty much like clockwork, morning one can be on the harder side but no difficulty passing anything. Not sure if that’s related to dairy or not 🤔

@GingerScallop Thank you 😊 yeah I’ve definitely seen some who eat more food overall too - I guess all kids are different 😊
That must be frustrating if they’re just not into milk and things! Will they eat a cheese sauce and take milk in cereal etc?

You're doing amazing. Wish my 14 month old would eat as much as that - not just dairy but anything!

Thanks @miltonj - I was so lucky that he took to solids incredibly quickly and loves his food. My best friend had (and still has at 18 months) an awful time with trying to get hers to eat so I’ve seen how frustrating it can be 😓

Babies at need around 400mg of calcium per day. 4oz if milk has around 122mg, 70g yogurt has about 140mg and 15g of cheese has about 120mg. Your menu sounds absolutely fine!
