Worried & don't know what to do :(

DS is 7 months next week.
Been weaning now for 2 months. Weaned early from health visitor's advice.
He's just gone off his milk completely and I'm worried.
He's having 1-3oz in the morning (offering 7oz which is what he usually drinks). So then I offer breakfast. I make porridge with his milk to get extra milk in and he devours it.
Then the rest of the day will have 2-3oz each feed.
Yesterday for the first time he devoured a full jar for the first time and a full mini yoghurt pot at lunch (I offer him whatever he will eat and however much he wants until he's had enough - usually it's half a jar amount and a few teaspoons of fruit purée/yoghurt). Skipped dinner last night to see if that would tempt his appetite for more milk but no luck.
Last night though he dream fed 6oz and then woke up at 3am and had 7oz (he's started waking in the night again now weaning has started but previously slept through).
I just don't know what to do. Should I stop giving/reduce food so that he will take more milk? Or should I keep offering him more food to make up for the milk he's not drinking?
I'm literally losing the will to live. He's been a nightmare with his milk from day 1 and just when we started settling down in a nice routine and drinking 30-35oz, this happens and the stress all comes back again 😞

Perhaps you could mention this to your health visitor and ask their advice, since it was they who suggested early weaning.

I would be tempted to offer him less overnight to try and encourage him to have his calories during the day. That's what was suggested to me as if they fill their calories intake during the day they're more likely to sleep through and also not get in the routine of needing so much overnight.
Also, would it be worth offering him a bottle before actual food?

emetophobe12 · 03/11/2021 15:15

@MissLC good idea. I think I'll make a 5oz instead of 7oz tonight and slowly make it less and less and see if that helps.
I always offer milk before food anyway but because he's not drinking much milk I feel that I have to fill him up on food to make up for it

I've just read on another forum that babies at 7 months are having just 3 bottles a day! Breakfast lunch and before bed. I was under the impression that this shouldn't really happen until around 9 months if that 🤷🏽‍♀️

Is he happy? Pooing, sleeping, growing, reaching milestones?

Don't ask other people, look at your child, if you think he's eating a balanced diet, isn't hungry and is thriving you have your answer.

My eldest did this. The paediatrician (we lived the US where all kids see them as standard) was totally unconcerned, said they all wean at different rates and as long as her growth stayed on track then the only thing we should do was give her multivitamin drops. She’s now 4 and very healthy!

Hadalifeonce · 03/11/2021 15:47

I stopped BF my DD at 8 months, she wouldn't touch any milk after that, I just made sure she had milky porridge and puddings, or things like cauliflower cheese to make sure she got enough.

My LO is 7 months and still has 6 bottles a day of between 4 and 5oz. She's not massively taken to eating yet but seems to enjoy trying
Hope you get sorted soon xx

@VitalsStable yes to all of the above. I suppose I'm worried because they say they should still be having at least 500-600ml a day which the past couple of days he is just reaching with a push

@LakeShoreD that's very reassuring thank you. I'm going to look into the multivitamins! That would def help with my anxiety around it.

@Hadalifeonce thank you! I will try to fortify his meals as best I can

@MissLC thank you 🙏🏼

Mine did this! She took to weaning really well and completely went off her milk for a bit - guess it was boring by comparison! I went with the mantra of "I can only offer it to her" and just gave her plenty of milky food and occasionally a multivitamin on days when she really didnt take much. It was just a phase and shes now 10 months and taking her milk so well again that I'm worried about weaning her off it when she gets to a year! Just try and stay calm and remember that you cant force baby to eat or drink anything - you can only offer. And as PP said, keep an eye on nappies, weight gain etc. in the meantime!
