Worried about DS and food - getting the balance right

To give today as an example, DS (10 months) had:

Porridge and a yoghurt (one of those tiny ones) for breakfast, then for lunch maybe half a fish finger, three peas Hmm and a tiny bit of potato. Maybe three shapes of pasta for tea. He has had a small banana.

He’s had 15 oz of formula throughout the day.

It feels as if he’s barely eating anything. I do worry a bit and try to encourage him. I’m worried about transitioning from formula too.

Can anyone else with a baby this age guide me?

Sounds fine to me - they don't eat a lot of that age. I remind myself every day that all you can do is offer. Babies are great at regulating themselves. You also have to look at what they've had over the week. I would offer a bit more fruit, though.

Just be careful with those yoghurts - they tend to have a lot of sugar in them. Greek yoghurt is great at this age.

Are you offering a multivitamin? Once they're at around 450-500ml of formula, they say they do need it. Particularly one with iron in.

Thanks, no, I will look into that. Could definitely do with more fruit - one of those days where we are our a lot, but he often just won’t eat, and then I worry about him not filling up with protein.

He’s never been a brilliant eater so it does stress me out!

Between 10 and 12 months he only needs 13.5 floz (400 ml) of formula a day. So that usually about 2 bottles.

Could you try and cut him down to that to see if it sparks his interest in the food?

RosieLee2019 · 19/10/2021 18:56

Sounds just like my 10 month old - he only eats a few mouthfuls a lot of the time. He breastfeeds on demand and I know milk is still the main source of nutrition til 1, but I'm slightly worried about what happens once he turns 1! Thay said, I know I can't force him to eat, and I just try and stay relaxed about it as I know if I get stressed, it could have a negative impact on mealtimes.

I hope that this info is useful

Is he eating what you're eating? That's what I would feed him.

Magicalwoodlands · 19/10/2021 19:43

No - he mostly eats at nursery to be honest. It’s tricky at weekends sometimes.

Thanks for the info. @RosieLee2019 I’d be less worried about breast feeding as there’s so much goodness in it but I know he should be off formula in two months! It’s hard!

Why is it tricky? He can eat anything you eat.

Magicalwoodlands · 19/10/2021 20:29

My question was about quantity to be honest.

I think it's best to look at what they've eaten over a week. This should help you to relax if he refuses a meal as you can just assume they're not hungry.

As long as he's following his centiles you don't have to worry about him eating very little at a mealtime.

Have you thought anymore about reducing him to two bottles a day?
