What should 12 month old be drinking his daily pint of cows milk out of?

He currently drinks formula milk out of MAM bottles with teats and has water with meals out of a sippy cup (no valve). NHS advises to stop bottles at 12 months due to tooth decay and speech delay. I don't know that he'll drink his milk out of the sippy cup as he normally throws it after a few sips. Is a bottle with a straw taking a step back or is this fine? I've tried a 360 cup but he just bites it. Don't want to attempt an open cup just yet because I'm confident it will end up all over him.

12 months is old enough to introduce an open cup for sure. No-spill ones are fine occasionally (when out) but my understanding is that open or free-flowing is better for oral development and should be used routinely. Remember that the pint of cow's milk is a guide and that it doesn't need to be drunk necessarily. You can offer plain/Greek yoghurt, low salt cheeses as well as any cooking with milk - rice puddings, sauces etc.

I gave them an open cup in the bath at first with cow's milk in to get them used to it.

They don't need formula at 12 months though. The recommendation is to have 300 ml of full fat cow's milk a day between 12 and 24 months and this can include milk used in things like porridge.

One of mine used sippy cups, another refused them and had to move straight to open cups.

Agree with pp that he is unlikely to drink as much volume of milk once you ditch the bottles. That’s fine as long as he is having calcium from other sources (cheese, yoghurt, milk on cereal etc).

Am open cup or cup with straw are better than a sippy cup which encourages the same tongue movement as a bottle

I didn't know that @Littleducks Smile

I used a double handed beaker.

My DD's had anywayup cups, they loved them and took some removing at around 4

I just put it in the sippy cup. One with a no spill valve then just a tommee tippee one

Plenty of people carry on with a bottle if you're more comfortable with it.
