My DS is 6 months old and has been weaning for 2 weeks he has to have a dairy free diet so far he has been having porridge and have tried a few different veg pureed he doesn't seem very interested in what he eats he makes all the right noises and smacks his lips but when giving him food looses interest but if im eating he gets excited and reaches for it . I have tired purees and a little blw and he seemed a little more interested but im scared to give him other things incase he chokes any ideas what I can give him to eat ?.

I really wouldn't worry about choking. Firstly, you'll be with him so you'll see straightaway. Have you thought of doing a Paediatric First Aid Course if it's really worrying you? There are some great instructional videos on YouTube.

This article on the difference between choking abs gagging should be helpful as well

Things that are DF that he might like to try are:

Eggy bread cut into fingers so that he can pick it up. You could put some berries on the side to make it more healthy.

Blueberry Pancakes. We use almond milk instead of cow's milk.

Spag Bol. Just put some on his tray and let him smush it into his hair eat it. You might want a full bib on for this one though Smile

Salmon Fish fingers with some steamed broccoli on the side.

Violife Cream cheese on a plain toasted bagel with halved cherry tomatoes or halved grapes.

Baby Dahl and Banana-Cado will both be more interesting and nutritious than single puréed vegetables Smile

Go for it with finger foods.

He can eat anything you can except whole nuts, honey, raw shellfish and in his case dairy.

Look at your own plate and if it can be picked up he can have it.

Aim for chip sized pieces that are easy to hold.

He's very unlikely to choke. He might tag though. Which is normal. It's how he learns to live food around and stop himself choking.

Any fruit, veg, meat, bread, etc is all fine.

Thanks for replies Smile
@DominicRaabsTravelAgent i have done first aid many times for my job which is mostly for adults but they have touched on babies so I know what to do but still worry think I have just seen too many people choke. But thanks for the video link will give it a watch and refresh memory might make me feel better . Today I gave him toast with mashed avocado ooh so much easier than faffing about woth purees he was excited and interested he didn't choke or gag but to be honest im not sure how much actually went down he is paying interest in food but nothing is actually getting assumed if that makes sense.

@MajorCarolDanvers thankyou yeah that makes sense and means we can eat same foods as a family and less hassle.my worry is im giving him food he is trying to eat it and chewing it paying way more interest now that I'm giving him chunks but he still isn't actually eating anything is that normal ?.

It's completely normal.

It can take weeks before anything will actually be eaten. It will be played with, squished, dropped, licked first. Totally normal and fine

Sorry the cliche but it's true - food before one is just for fun. He's getting his nutrition from his milk and learning how to each from his finger food.

@MajorCarolDanvers thankyou so much that helps alot and makes me feel like I know what I'm doing now lol. Dietician wants me to introduce known allergy foods as he has eczema so we shall see how that goes Smile

Agree, it all sounds completely normal. The only real way you can tell if there's any going in is if their poo changes.

He's been on milk for 6 months though and thrived. A switch hasn't been flicked where he suddenly needs huge amount of food to survive. Just keep offering a variety and if he doesn't eat it, assume he's not hungry at that point.

Glad the refresher of the video helped Smile
