Are weaning spoons necessary?

The plastic ones? I just use the little silver teaspoons we have and so far it's been okay but I keep thinking shall I get the plastic ones? My child is nearly 6 months

When they bite down on a metal spoon it can be sore on their soft gums. Also when they use the spoon themselves and poke themselves in the eyes, a plastic spoon is slightly safer.

I would be a bit worried my little one would hurt her mouth, she used to chomp on the spoon like mad. They also get a lot hotter tham plastic spoons. And make more of a clatter when they start throwing them on the floor 😅 I would buy some... I thought it was an essential of weaning tbh.

PunchyAnts · 21/08/2021 10:27

I would get a handful of plastic or silicone spoons for the same reasons above but chip in that I preferred a normal shaped spoon over the long-handled weaning spoons. Your LO will want to feed themself soon and the long spoons are more difficult for them to coordinate getting in their mouth.

If you’re uncomfortable with the plastic there are some good bamboo spoons available.

faithfulbird20 · 21/08/2021 10:45

@PunchyAnts are there any that you recommend?

Any baby spoon is fine but I'd avoid metal for all the reasons already given. Just type in eco friendly in your search if you're wanting to cut down on plastic use

We got a 6 pack of the brand bamboo bamboo spoons in a present - they have wooden handles and silicon tops. They've been a great option although slightly pricy. Good size, easy for child to use, wash well and have proven durable so far. Still using them at 2. I think the rest of DDs cutlery is picnic cutlery from IKEA or supermarket.

We have some silicon tommee tippee ones that are good.
Not too big for dd's mouth and they don't hurt her when she decides to vote them and growl like a dog

*bite

Xyzzzzz · 21/08/2021 10:54

I just got some from the local supermarket no issues

HereWeGoAgainRoundAndRound · 21/08/2021 11:13

Try these www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/bottles---feeding-accessories/sainsburys-little-ones-2-soft-tip-weaning-spoons-4-months.

We use them and perfect for now teeth are coming through.

Gembie · 21/08/2021 19:17

We use the Tommy Tippee long handled heat sensitive ones that change colour - these were great for feeding purées early on and we still use them. We also use the Tommy tippee ones that they feed themselves with - they’re shorter and more stubby

guiltynetter · 21/08/2021 20:29

This sounds like a market research post for a spoon company 😅 spoons are spoons surely! Just buy some from the supermarket

AlmostSummer21 · 21/08/2021 20:33

I don't like the long ones. I prefer the straight shirt silicon ones for feeding them snd the curved ones fit them feeding themselves, but you definitely need some softer ones for weaning than normal teaspoons.

mayblossominapril · 21/08/2021 20:37

For DS I just bought a bag of Ikea plastic cutlery by the time dd arrived the spoons were worse for wear so I bought an asda set of picnic cutlery. I did get dd some long handled munchkin ones for when I spoon feed her and ds liked the boots ones with the silicone soft spoon bowl.

CourtneyCox2021 · 26/08/2021 08:30

We have a variety. Gifts and such and my LO only really likes the pound land ones 😂 😂 they in a pack all purple have forks in there too.

faithfulbird20 · 26/08/2021 10:48

@guiltynetter haha no way. I'm just trying to be minimalistic. But if normal teaspoons would hurt babies mouth and get hot. I might as well buy plastic ones/bamboo that are safe.
