Have just got the point of not spoon feeding BLW babies

Just a warning for those of you who want to do BLW but spoon feed occasionally.

My DS who up until recently was quite happy to demolish sandwiches and pitta bread etc will now not entertain the notion of picking anything up and feeding himself.

He just sits there like a little bird with his mouth open and his toes waggling waiting to be fed. If I just hand him something to feed himself he screams the place down until I do it for him.

I think if you want to do BLW properly then you should try and spoon feed as little as possible as I now realise the whole point of BLW is that they need to realise that if they want the food then they have to do it themselves and not rely on you to do it.

Ha ha...this post made me laugh - I know what you mean. I made the mistake of giving my dd a bit toast to eat....then I broke off bits and popped them in her mouth to help her out. Now she just waits for me to do this all the time!!

DS is doing BLW, he is 6.5 mo. I didn't help him at all with anything, then decided to try him on porridge for his breakfast, anticipating I would feed him, thinking it would be a good idea to have him happy with me feeding him as well, and not thinking about the possibilty of problems like you're having. He wouldn't have a word of it though and only want to do it himself

Karen, that is exactly how we started on the slippery slope to spoon feeding!!

The allergy consultant we've been seeing was threatening us with iron supplements so I started popping bits of food into his mouth and now he just won't do it himself!

I am doing a combination at the minute. She is quite happy to be spoon fed at breakfast for her cereal. Then at lunch time she won't entertain the idea so give her things that she can hold! But as I said, she sits there and waits!! Oh well at least she is eating I suppose. I think it's like most phases and that she will start to do it herself again soon...here's hoping....
