Disastrous day! Hives!

Baby is on his third day of weaning and he broke out in hives within 5 minutes of eating baby porridge with water. I’m assuming he may be intolerant to milk, but unsure. He also has eczema and I’m just wondering if what I’m eating is impacting his skin condition.

I feel scared to introduce more foods to him now.

Anyone with any experience with their LO’s breaking out in hives as result of food allergies?

First off don't panic.

I have a baby with milk allergy and another one who came out in hives after having some sesame.

I'm guessing he's not had formula before? If so change up breakfast to baby rice for now. There are no allergens in that so if his skin clears then you know it's something in the food.

Once clear try something like weetabix mixed with his usual milk.

For other allergens introduce them early and try not to worry. When my daughter reacted to the sesame we got a GP appointment and referral to allergy clinic. They tested her and no reaction. She's never reacted again.

Something these things are a one off

As PP said do not panic. My 8 year old was severely allergic to dairy and eggs as a baby and toddler (swollen eyes, trouble breathing the works) and now he eats regular pizza.

Was it just water that was used to make the porridge or did you add dairy? What else did you feed him before the porridge? Also how long before the hives disappeared?

I would skip the porridge for now and move on to other foods. I would skip baby rice as it's been shown to have no nutrients and give regular rice (not brown rice) instead. Other hypoallergenic foods like potatoes/sweet potatoes, avocados, banana, steamed broccoli and carrots.

It would be wise to keep a good diary and not any symptoms so you can keep track of what he eats and the possible effect. Speak to your GP as well.
Try not to worry (easier said) he will be fine.

Hives isn't an intolerance it is an IGE allergy. Please speak to your GP about this before giving dairy again.

He was mix fed for 1 month after birth so he has had formula in the past.

It was with water and the hives went away after a few hours. His face is still red and has a rash on his face and chest. His skin is also extremely dry.

It is uncommon to have a reaction to oats but not unheard of. I forgot to say mine had eczema on his face as a baby also. At least you know there's no reaction to dairy. I would move on and not give porridge until after speaking with your doctor. Make sure to keep a food diary as well.
Do you use mild steroids for his eczema? For skin we found Atoderm by Bioderma to be great. We've also used aveeno baby and a whole range. I used to put Vaseline on the skin around the mouth to help with drooling and during weaning.

Here’s a picture of the ingredients.

Sorry guy’s I’ve been calling it baby porridge all this time. Probably not appropriate.

It definitely has milk in it.

Probably better not to give any processed foods at this stage, otherwise it will be a nightmare to work out what he might be reacting to!

Yes, that’s true. Good idea. My baby nephew was eating it so I gave my baby a teaspoon without thinking about the ingredients.

@Hope54321 yes you're right it does contain milk. I'd use just plain porridge oats and water.
