Weaning going backwards

Hi all, just after some advice. My DS is now 7 months old and our weaning journey has gone backwards!! Initially he loved weaning and would eat 3 ice cube worths of purreed food. We mainly did vegetables and then combined flavours. Such as leek, cheese and potato, brocolli and parsnip etc. I also gave him food to explore (soft cooked veg, toast, crumpet, soft fruit). We moved to 2 meals a day breakfast and lunch. However over the last week he is really disinterested in any food. He won't be spoon fed anymore just clamps his mouth shut. I can occasionally get a spoonful in (which he eats) but he doesn't open his mouth for more and I don't want to force him. I thought he might just want to feed himself so have given him different finger foods (courgette fritters, cheese and potato pie strips) but he's not interested in that either!!! This morning he has eaten 2 spoonfuls of weetabix and banana and he has squished together some cheese spread on toast. The only things he will eat are yogurt and any fruit he can feed himself (strawberries, orange, pineapple). I don't want to give him yogurt and fruit everyday though!!! I'm at a loss. It was all going so well and it now isn't!!! Shall I just keep offering him food? Is it just a phase? Any advice for a worried clueless first time mum would be greatly received! X

It could just be a phase. Or he might be getting some teeth through and it's a bit uncomfortable? Or silly little things like being a bit snotty, makes it harder to eat.

My DS was always a bit "famine or feast" as well. Sometimes it would feel like he would happily eat his body weight, other days he just wasn't interested!

7 months is still very young, and milk should still be his primary source of sustenance, so try not to worry too much as long as he's drinking. Just keep offering a variety, and little and often. He'll eat what he wants.

Don’t worry, Just keep offering a variety, finger foods and purées.
He’ll be having his milk so that’s his main source for him.

I'd try to look at what he eats over a week, rather than a meal or a day. Almost all babies eat more some days than others.

My DD was a spoon refuser too. What encouraged her to eat was putting her on my knee when I ate and turning a blind eye when she helped herself to my food. I didn't do this for every meal though.

I'd just keep offering food and don't stress I she doesn't eat it yet, lots of babies haven't got the hang of solids at 7 months Smile

Thank you everyone for your words of wisdom! It was just baffling how we were doing so well and then not anymore! I will keep offering good and go with the flow. He is still having plenty of milk and is sleeping well so he can't be hungry. For breakfast I put some porridge on a spoon and left it on his tray and he ate a few spoons like that which was better than we have done in the past. I mean he did end up with porridge caked onto his eyelashes but hey I guess you can't win them all!!

My DS is the same age as yours so right there with you! From the reading I've done, exposure to different foods is equally as important so even if he just picks it up and squadges (sp?!) it between his fingers he's getting used to the textures of food.

Could you try holding it up in the air infront of him so it's easier to grab? DS also will take food from my mouth, admittedly I look a bit of a lemon with a broccoli floret in between my teeth but he finds it hilarious and will happily take it then put it in his mouth.

Are you eating at the same time as him?
