8 month DS seems to be having a reaction to eggs - what next?

Gave him some of DD's omelette and he has come out in hives around his mouth. THis was about 25 mins ago, they seem to be fading a bit now. Picture in profile (does that look like a bad reaction? I have no idea)

so I have googled and a lot of places have said no egg whites before 12 months. Am I the only idiot who didn't know this? No food allergies in family, DH has asthma but only got it a couple of years ago.

what next? Do I have to avoid all egg stuff in all products. Should I go to the doctor? SHould I be watching him like a hawk right now in case he has a really bad reaction?

arrrggggghhhhh slightly freaked out. DS seems fine otherwise (but has been a little bit sick)

(and clearly am not going to get an answer for a while due to time, but wanted to get this down before bath and bedtime)

Hi
Ds had the same rash with banana and raw tomato!

Well, yes, you have to wait 12 mths for eggs.
I know a few kids with serious egg allergy who can still manage a cupcake once in a while.

The only way to know for sure is to try with a cookie. And make sure you don't try anything else new for 4 consecutive days.
Respect the 4 day rule for every new food you introduce from now on.

Keep a bottle antihystamines in the kitchen if there is reaction (ask pharmacist for what's appropriate at that age).

Unless the reaction to a specific food is very serious , I think you can try again a couple of months later. Check with Dr.

DS is the same - I gave him scrambled egg and he came out in urticaria all over his body, it was awful!!

DH is a GP so we didn't see anyone, treated him with anitihistamine, it was an awful evening.

Realised quite quickly that he can eat bicuits and cakes etc just not eggy eggs (as we call them!)

We have a friend who is a immunologist who advised us not to cut out things with egg in them if he could tolerate them as gentle exposure over the next couple of years should mean he will grow out of it. (It is the most common food allergy in young children and the most likely to grow out of).

DS is 2 now and he's doing ok. Haven't tried again with scrambled, boiled, fried egg again yet, I think we will wait until he is about 5 on the advice of our friend.

Of course this is our experience and you might be wise to get him seen by your GP. Hope he is ok but I have to say it has not been too much of a problem for us

Thank you very much for your replies

How did I not know it was 12 months? I feel like a total idiot. I remembered about honey, but not eggs. I very rarely eat them either but DD loves an omelette

The hives have gone away now thank goodness. I shall leave eggs for a good few months now

Has he ever had a nything with egg in it before? Likes cakes or biscuits?

FWIW DS was 9 months when we gave scrambled egg!!!! I didn't know either but quickly found out!

Don't be too hard on yourself. On the plus side you have found out about his allergy earlier, he still would have been allergic to eggs at 1 year! Hope you have a good day

MrsJohnCusack · 19/11/2007 06:50

I'm sure he's had something with egg in before because I remember thinking 'ooh that's got egg in it'. BUt I can't remember what it was (I am really sleep deprived) just not straight egg.

Don't think he's had cake or biscuits though

he's had pasta that I'm sure has egg in it.

Alot of pastas don't have egg in. My DD had the same reaction, just had a skin prick test and came out highly allergic to egg white, and quite allergic to egg yolk. I was advised to cut out all egg products and get retested in a year. She hasn't reacted to a little cake but I'm now avoiding it. They don't advise Piriton until they are a year old at chemists but it is safe for an under a year old to take it for hives, thats what they would give at A&E but go to your GP first.

There is much debate whether complete avoidance or a little bit to build up tolerance is best. The problem with a little bit to build up tolerance is that you can go over the edge and get a very bad reaction.

Go to your doctor and demand a skin prick test.

Definitely go to the docs and get him tested - they'll also be able to test for any other common allergies (linked to egg) which will help you when thinking about his diet.

DD has now grown out of her egg allergy at about 2.5. She was ok with some cakes and not with others. Just hit and miss and keeping a close eye on her when eating something new.

DD was also prescribed clarityn by allergy clinic when she was about 9 months so safe to have - I think the bottle says safe from 2 years.

okeydoke thanks
I will go to the GP and see what they suggest
