Soya/dairy free weaning &milks

Hi,

I have a (probably daft) question. I’ve asked my health visitor and she’s told me to check with the dietician and I can’t get through.

I know with cow’s milk you can use from 6 months if cooked into food or used with cereal but I wondered if this was the same with oat and almond milk?

I weaned DD dairy free because of her allergy, yep you can use any alternative milk for cooking but not as a drink.
We use oatly barista as it's high fat and fortified.
Keep using the current main milk whether that's FF or BF and you can offer cups of water too.

Perfect thanks! I’ve got an older child so been there before but my youngest has a soya and dairy allergy so just wanted to double check! He’s breastfed so will keep on as normal and use oat milk for any cooking

I found it daunting to begin with, and you have the extra complexity of soya too, but you will be absolutely fine.

I never thought she'd grow out of it but we've gone from DD having hives out of her ears spreading all over her body from a drop of cows milk rubbed on her lip and a huge weal on her skin prick test, to now at 21 months she's eating a cheese sandwich. I tried the ladder a few times and this time she's just flown up it, it's unbelievable.

Thank you both! We’re just back from a&e after he reacted to avocado. The insides of his cheeks swelled up Sad another one to add to the food challenges at a later date!

Allergies really worry me. It’s just new to me I suppose as I didn’t experience this with my older son.

Oh no, that must have been scary, did they say to be careful with anything else? I think banana and latex are similar to avocado? Did they give you a prescription for piriton?

We ended up in an ambulance to hospital after DD reacted really badly to cashew so we were told to avoid all new nuts, she was previously fine with peanut and almond so we carry on with those. She had a positive skin prick test for cashew and cows milk at 15 months, with the advice to avoid nuts until the next SPT in a years time ( when she'll be over 2), but to try the milk ladder in 6m.

There were loads of things that DD got hives from at the start of weaning that don't affect her now, avocado, salmon, sunflower oil, egg, as well as the usual high histamine foods like tomato. But I tried them again to be sure and over time she stopped getting hives. And like I said before I absolutely can't believe she can now eat a cheese sandwich without all of her usual instant (IgE ?) severe CMPA symptoms.

If they didn't give you a bottle of liquid piriton I'd definitely keep one in the cupboard, I know it says over ones but we got a prescription at 8 months, and it was a comfort to know it's in the cupboard. Try not to be nervous of the allergen foods, I think the recommendation is to give them one at a time with 3 days between?

Good luck, I know it feels daunting to start with.

Morning, they told me to look up the related food group/allergens. I did that and saw that banana and latex are linked, like you say. I always saw melon might be too. I spoke to the dietician yesterday and they said cinnamon and bay leaf are also linked. She didn’t say to avoid these but to be cautious.

No prescription for piriton but I will go out and buy some just to keep in the cupboard. Thanks for that.

You’re right about the same food for 3 days too (you’re obviously a pro at this- I may be back for more advice 😂) well the dietician said 2-3 but I might stick to 3 for the first few days.

It does feel daunting. I was feeling pretty confident before Thursday night but it kind of brought it home how serious it can be and how quick it can come on.

Thank you for your help.
