We both have no food allergens to worry about so I m considering whether we could go straight to adapted meals, for example giving him and bit of chicken, peppers and rice when we have curry instead of just some pepper strips?

Absolutely! That's the whole joy of it - you can give bits of whatever you are having. Not too salty, decent sized bits, and basic guidance about avoiding choking food (whole grapes, popcorn, marshmallows) and all is well.

Absolutely fine to Chuck them a bit of what you’re having but bear in mind the baby can only eat what they can pick up. I’ve done blw three times now and rice is one of the few things that always gets spoon fed. The mess is incredible otherwise. Ditto bolognaise. Grin

How old is baby?
We started at 6 months, and very quickly went from veg to everything (like, about a week).
Rice wouldnt be high on my list tho - you need really good pincer grip or a child who squishes it into rice balls and then stuffs in face

@DancesWithDaffodils he ll be six months in 3 weeks when we plan to start :) yes that was a bad example, we ll hold off on the rice in favour of other carbohydrates for a bit then.
@DorotheaHomeAlone I ve been told we need a mat or shower curtain for the mess but never seen the mess in person before.
@RockCrushesLizard we don't use much salt since I got gestational hypertension so adapting what we eat hopefully is going to be easy for us :)

No reason you can't however...

I think the idea of individual veg/fruit to begin with is not just for allergies. It's supposed to help them identify individual flavours and in the long run support them eating a wide variety of foods. Also just remember if their tummies have only had milk before lots of different new foods at once can effect their tummies/nappies in not great ways!

We were giving DS the same food as ourselves by 7 months but did do seperate/ small combos first. And you don't need a spoon for rice- you have to embrace the mess!

Tortellini are good instead of spaghetti. I didn't bother with rice. Would you eat rice with your fingers?

Throughabushbackwards · 08/04/2021 22:59

We did this by accident. DC just leaned over one day and helped himself to some of the pasta that was on my plate and that was that! We just have him suitable bits and pieces from our meals from there on.

Lazy-Lea Weaning! It's what I did when everyone was Annabel Karmelling and freezing stuff in ice cube trays and then complaining little Lucas wasn't eating all the stuff they'd spent 3 hours cooking pureeing and freezing.

I simply sat on my knee at mealtimes (we cooked with zero added salt), mashed stuff on my plate nearest baby with a fork and let them dip in to whatever they fancied while I ate. Easy peasy no extra prep no extra washing up. Hence LLW. .
Eldest particularly is least fissy eater I know.

*fussy

@Ariela I mean I love cooking but blending and freezing stuff does not appeal to me at all. He's massive for his age so we ll probably stick to his highchair rather than sit him on our knees.

You could do, but our baby has ended up with severe nut allergies, dh or I have no allergies.
We gave him some toast with cream cheese and peanut butter at 6 months and he hadn’t had any of them before so it then delayed everything whilst doctors did tests as he wasn’t allowed anything with gluten in incase it was the bread, anything with dairy incase it was the cream cheese and no nuts.

So we then had about 6 weeks of basically fruit, veg and meat. Also couldn’t give any fish or beans/ lentils as they said they are high risk categories to also be allergic to. So until we had full blood test which tested for 200 odd things it was hard to know what would be safe.
