Does your child eat all the pouch or just half? My little one is almost 7 months and we started at 6 months and he was having half a pouch for dinner and other half at lunch but I'm thinking as he gets older should he be eating all of it now? The pouches are 130g

He's eating other things too, right?

Poppet12345 · 12/03/2021 13:38

All of it, then roots for more 😂 I wait until I see she's had enough then stop(which is a rarity)

pinkandblueflowers · 12/03/2021 13:58

@MindGrapes a few other bits yes

I mean it's hard to say just from that. What else are they having? How much milk? When you take the spoon away have they started turning their head away or are they try to get more?

pinkandblueflowers · 12/03/2021 14:09

He doesn't try to get more no. On 7oz a feed about 4 times a day

SleepingStandingUp · 12/03/2021 14:11

What does he have all day tho?

So
7oz for breakfast
7oz for lunch
7oz for dinner
7oz for supper say

Is it half a pouch at each meal? Half a pouch all day? Breakfast? Fruit?

pinkandblueflowers · 12/03/2021 14:59

Half a pouch 3 times a day

Punches are fine occasionally, but do you really not have time to whizz up some actual food? If you taste them, most of them taste disgusting and not like a home made puree.

MindGrapes · 12/03/2021 16:29

Yes, they're heat treated so taste pretty grim, and all taste quite similar. I used the "meal" ones every so often e.g. if on the go but not for every meal or every day. I actually thought the Hipp jars were a bit nicer and more variety.

I'd start giving a little bit of soft finger food or things to gum on soon too. In my experience it took about 6 weeks for them to work out the actual mechanics of eating and then you really want to be giving a range of flavours and textures. You'll get a better picture of how much food he needs that way.
I kept using the fruit puree ones for dessert for ages though, mixed in plain yoghurt as they're quite sugary. The prune ones are really nice!

pinkandblueflowers · 12/03/2021 16:42

Just to add he only has 2 teeth

OP posts:
MindGrapes · 12/03/2021 16:53

That's fine, you don't need teeth to gum on stuff or have soft food! It's more about getting a range of flavours and textures. Maybe a bit of cream cheese or mushed avo or banana on a piece of rice cake, or boiled bit of sweet potato?

SleepingStandingUp · 12/03/2021 17:00

He sounds like he's getting enough milk, but I'd swap one of those pouch meals for porridge/baby porridge/ Weetabix made up with enough milk to make it sloppy and do that for breakfast, then try him with more pouch at lunch and feed til he stops or starts turning away etc, and then maybe some mashed up veggies at dinner? Give him some soft veg to chomp on too

stuckinarutatwork · 12/03/2021 17:05

At 7 months he should be eating finger foods. Teeth aren't necessary. Try fingers of omelette, toast, crumpets, breadsticks (the baby ones melt in the mouth), steamed broccoli, slices of banana etc.

RosaBaby2 · 12/03/2021 17:07

You're absolutely fine as long as he's getting enough milk. Food is for fun until 12m and not really a necessity. My lo was barely interested til he was one.

Anotheruser02 · 12/03/2021 17:16

you can get one of those stick blenders for under 15 pounds, at his age you can blitz through anything you have for dinner, veg pieces, fish, meat you would reclaim the blender price fast buying fewer pouches and you will find transition to table food easier if your little one has the full flavour of your foods from the begining. if you don't really cook much you can blend soft fruit, avacado, the fish fillet out of a fish finger, the flesh of microwaved sweet potato. don't worry about quantity at this age just experiencing tastes.

Vicky1989x · 13/03/2021 16:00

My DD is 10 months and I usually give her half a pouch/jar of the 10+ month then I give her finger food. For lunch today she had half a pouch, a yoghurt, half a cheese toastie (cut up into squares) and some blueberries. She doesn’t have any teeth yet and does really well with ‘real’ food. Smile

ChocOrange1 · 19/03/2021 07:04

All babies are different. Just follow his lead.
My daughter would only eat about a tablespoon of food at any meal at 7 months, whereas my friends daughter would have a whole pouch. If he still seems hungry after half a pouch, offer him more but if he doesn't want it all, that's fine too. And it may vary from one day to another.

I also agree with the posters suggesting you offer him finger food and mashed up proper food instead of just pouches.

SomethingbeginningL · 19/03/2021 07:10

Don't worry about the volume of food he's eating right now. Food under one is just for fun is what the health visitor said to us.

My second child just flat out refused to eat anything at all until he was 12m. He would gag and get very upset with a spoon.

From 10 months we did baby led weaning. Just left him to it. He still didn't really ready anything until he was 18 months.

Didn't eat a full meal until he was 2.

He's nearly 3 now and is eating close to normal amounts with cutlery.

FartnissEverbeans · 29/03/2021 02:01

‘Food under one is just for fun’ is nonsense. Babies need nutrients from food from early on. Iron deficiency is potentially an issue, especially for bf babies.

Having said that, I’ve done this weaning thing and there are no rules. If your baby wants more, give him more. Just follow the baby’s lead. You can probably start experimenting with finger foods too if you think he’s ready and you’re comfortable with it.

Don’t listen to anyone who makes stupid comments about pouches. Baby food nowadays is really high quality and much more convenient than making your own imo. Generally people are negative about anything that makes life easier for mothers, because if you’re not exhausted and miserable you’re not doing it right Hmm I can’t actually believe someone commented on your baby food choice when it was nothin to do with the question. I doubt that person is a dietician so just ignore them and their judgement.

hesnearly3 · 29/03/2021 09:21

@FartnissEverbeans thanks for ur reply. Since I first posted I've realised that I was giving baby too much milk and that's why they weren't hungry. So I'm now giving 3 bottles a day all 8oz and sometimes not all finished but usually most is had. Then around 2 bottles in the eve so one about 8pm then one around midnight

Because baby is having less bottles during the day it's easier to feed now. Funnily enough I've found that jar food is better than pouches!! I gave a 7 month pouch yesterday which says textured but it just looked like soup. On the other hand last week I gave lasagne from a jar and u could see the lumps of pasta in it so deffo thinking jar food seems more textured

FTEngineerM · 05/04/2021 20:34

Dont worry about teeth, not really required. As long as you cook food until it’s soft.
