blw and protein - for a dairy and soy allergic baby

after my last question about when do they start spoon feeding themselves, it seems that ds doesnt want us to spoon feed him anymore, but wants to feed himself.

So he is coercing me into blw!

Most things I am ok with - chunks of fruit and veg, pasta, bread etc etc but the protein is getting me stumped. How do I get protein into him through finger foods? I can't give cheese or any dairy or any dairy substitutes, but he found chewing chicken lumps hard. And don't get me started on the mess created through spag bol!!

Any helpful hints on finger food protein ideas?
He is 9 1/2 months old, and we've been told to steer clear of eggs, lentils / chick peas, dairy and soy, so I guess we have to deal with 'proper' meats...

Could you try fish? Easier for him to chew.

Also, he might hate them, but I gave my dairy intolerant child chicken livers quite often. Again easy to chew and very good for you.

so sorry to be really stupid, but how can I give fish as a finger food?

anything can be a finger food really - mashed potato, rice, etc - might be messy but they can still manage it.

dd has always loved big flakes of fish, it's no problem. tbh not much has been a problem, so long as you're not in too much of a hurry and not bothered about mess.

prawns. my 3DC lurrrve prawns. Dairy allergy too but not soy etc - poor u & LO! We make "kedgeree" fish & rice thing, miss out eggs if it is in the recipe, chop chives or spring onion in to make it tasty. Do i digress?? if so, sorry

oops no idea how that posted twice. too much laa-laa juice (pink fizzy bacardi-breezer-thingy...) going to ma head

Wow what a difficult one, dairy, eggs, lentils chickpeas all out!!???

Similar to spag bol but meatballs! - If you check out babyledweaning.com I have posted the recipe with the tomato sauce. If you 'magimix' the mixture before shaping it into balls it is really easy for them to eat/digest.

You could also blend up the chicken and make healthy nuggets?

Fishcakes? Mix the fish with mashed pots and herbs and stuff, shape into patties and fry in a bit of oil.

Erm.....This is quite difficult as I give babyshoes (6.5mths) actual pieces of meat to suck/chew. tbh I lob anything we're eating onto his high chair tray!!!! Dont worry if they find it hard, they will only eat what they can manage and it's a good learning process. But defo check out the recipes section of BLW website, there are some great ideas that we all share.

we do a healthy version of mini beefburgers, good fresh mince, chopped onion and some herb stuff, i only mix it with a tiny bit of breadcrumbs (hopefully LO not gluten free?) and a bit of warm water to bind it. my DS's (now 7yrs and 4yrs) make their own cos they love squeezing the mince into little balls and i cook them really quickly in the frying pan. If you can stand the mess we have them with a salsa dip!

oohh this thread now making me hungry. doesn't take much

AitchTwoOh · 04/11/2007 00:24

oh for some reason i thought you were veggie-ish... if it's just meat you're after then he can have anything. roast chicken, lamb chops, casseroled beef etc. sky's the limit.
rather than finger food, though, think in terms of giving the baby a baby fist-sized piece of meat to suck and chew on.

bunnyhunny · 04/11/2007 10:00

thanks I knew you would all come up with good stuff!
I'm going to try the beef burgers today - do you not need egg to bind it? I suppose it'd be easier if it all falls apart anyway
And not sure why I didn't think of the blended chicken nuggets, as I make them when I cook thai soup! I'll give the meatballs and fishcakes a go too later on.
Thank's aitch for telling me a fistsized bit of meat. I tried fingers of chicken, which didn't work. then chopped it up smaller, which he kept picking up and slowly and oh so carefully dropping right before he popped it in his mouth.

many babies seem to like the minced meat but ime with dd, it made her cough when she was wee precisely because it did break up. she was better off with a big hunk, funnily enough.
