Am I the only one who doesn't give her DCs milk of any sort?

DD1 was bfed to 17 m but I never gave her formula or follow-on milks or even milk to drink till she was about 2. I did use to stir a bit of soya based infant formula into her purees tho. Am doing the same with DD2. Both are good eaters and have a varied, healthy diet including other milk products but sometimes I wonder if I've done the right thing. Do babies and young children really need milk?

They'll be fine as long as they're eating cheese, yoghurt etc.
Mine have always been mad on milk and drink it every night though before bed.

There's a school of thought that says no - wasn't Heather Mills Macartney (hard to even type the woman's name) on about this recently?

My kids never had milk drinks. They were breastfed till 2 or 3, and had milk with cereal. They also had reasonable amounts of cheese and yoghurt.

It was really weird when we were living in the US, where milk was worshipped!

my dd does drink milk but am very wary about giving it to her as neither me or her dad drink milk as we dont like it so as soon as she does the i dont like it that will be it!

i dont think its necessary so long as they get plenty of calcium elsewhere. ds1 hardly drank any as he was bf for 3 year, had a glass now and then now. ds2 is a total milk addict, he weaned himself about 18mnths from the breast and now age 3 still would glug 3 pints a day if we let him. it doesnt iirc have a huge amount of nutritional value, though better than a fruit shot

LyraSilvertongue · 28/10/2007 20:46

Lots of calcium though.

Good, thanks, I'm not a wierdo or depriving my DCs then

What is it about milk that you want to avoid? I'm confused because you give them other dairy, which is just another form of milk.

If you wanted to completely avoid dairy, their are soya substitutes to youghurts, cheese, etc.

Why do you want to avoid milk?
