I was wondering whether anyone had good suggestions for a good first cup/beaker (DD is almost 6 months old) There seem to be so many choices, so thought i would find out if anyone had experience of one they loved.

Also when do you start giving water? Is this meant to go with meals? Bit confused about this.

I'm breastfeeding at the moment, and havnt given water yet.

Thanks in advance ....

The tommee tippee first cup is an ideal first cup as it is freeflowing so it doesnt have a valve. You can get them in a lot of the supermarkets, Boots, etc and it is cheap (it can be found cheaper than the price on their website). I offer water along with a solids meal and as my ds is a bit older (1yr) and no longer has milk feeds in the day he also has free access to it. When he still had milk feeds he only really got water with meals. As you breastfeed I would probably limit it to mealtimes too so that you maintain your milk supply.

My little girl likes her 'Doidy' cup - it has no lid but is slanted so they hardly have to tip it to drink. She's not liking solids too much, but this seems to work - loves sipping/lapping up water! Only around £3.

My DS 7 months also BF wont take bottle so tried lots of cups including the tommee tippee but found it hard in his mouth- he chewed but didn't get anything. We've found FAB cup from Tesco- MOBY make it and it has two handles and a completely silicone top and spount and DS chews water out of it, much the same action as BFeeding. Well worth the £3.75. Hope this helps. Ooh and he also just likes to have a tommee tippee without the lid and a little help to sip it like a big boy!!

hi, we're same age as you (5m1w) and just started feeding her a week ago. she loves the tommee tippee cup seona mentions above although we don't use the sippy lid, just let her hold both handles while i steady the cup body. i only give her water after her dinner as she's otherwise bf. somehow she just grabbed the handles and pulled it to her mouth and drank, just knew what to do which was a surprise so i figured i'd just not bother with the spout.

we used the nuk learner cup

naturopath · 30/10/2007 23:57

can you give a 4-month-old a cup?

nappyaddict · 31/10/2007 00:35

ds had a cup from birth cos he didn't take to bottles straight away.

We used and would recommend tommy tipee first cup too, really simple, nothing fancy, no valves or clever stuff.

Any beaker without handles is a good first cup, as it requires much less co-ordination than copeing with two thin sticks that want to go their own way.
