DS (nearly 9 mths) grabbed the spoon today...

... for the 1st time at lunch, and in an effort to encourage this new-found independence I loaded up the spoon with food and handed it to him, a few times, but all that happened was that he waved the spoon around so that all the food went flying, then put it in his mouth only to find all the food had disappeared, making him very cross and leaving me wondering how to get bolognaise sauce off my magnolia walls! Should I give up and try again in another few weeks when his co-ordination is better? Or keep trying and hope he will gradually realise you have to hold the spoon the right way up otherwise the food falls off? (Am also encouraging finger food, BTW, but with minimal success, so far limited to a few bites of naan bread and some emmental. Unfortunately his motor skills don't seem to be keeping up with his huge appetite!)

If spoonfeeding, you have your own spoon to feed him and just give him a spoon to 'play' with - eventually they will copy you and try and load up the spoon themselves, or at least get some sauce/flavour on it to lick off.

Good idea will try it at tea although suspect he may refuse to be fobbed off by the other spoon and still want to grab for the spoon I'm using, in the same way that he is totally uninterested in the old TV remote I took the batteries out of and gave him to play with, and still wants to grab the real one!

Use identical spoons. Give him 2 , one for each hand. If he taks your spoon just use one of his.
