6 month old screaming at night after starting solids

Hi

I started my son on solids at 5 1/2 months. I gave him very little once a day and it was going ok but one night, after a few days of trying a few different foods, he was very unsettled. He was crying, thrashing about and had what seemed to be an upset stomach. This resulted in me holding him all night. In the morning he did a massive poo and was fine again. I decided to leave solids for a while and he slept absolutely fine after that one night.

I tried solids again about 2 weeks later. Low and behold, after a few days he did the same thing. Again I stopped solids, just for the weekend to let his stomach settle. Tried again these last few days and he is doing the same thing again tonight.

I have only given him a teaspoon each time and only single fruits, veg, baby rice or baby porridge. This time he only had baby rice yesterday and banana porridge today. I also feed him first thing in the morning in hope that he'd digest the food before bed. He has also still pooped twice today so he's not constipated.

Do you think it's just new foods reaction or could he have an allergy?

I would reduce the variety to one or two foods for now and keep a food diary. He is only 6 months, milk should be his main food. Too many different foods all at once is probably too much and will make it impossible for you to work out which might be disagreeing with him.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try just one food for a few days to see what happens.

My eldest took to weaning so well that this is all a bit upsetting.

Thanks again

My DD was exactly the same when I started her on solids. It settled down after a week or so and she was sleeping fine again (well her version of fine anyway Grin)

I think it’s just their digestive system getting used to things other than milk. But like suggested I’d try just one food for a few days so you can work out if it is an allergy!

How are you getting on now @4Brown89?

4Brown89 · 12/12/2020 11:54

He's been better thanks. I have only tried baby rice so far and we haven't had any major issues. He definitely seems to have more trapped wind at night but nothing terrible like before. Tried him with carrot today so we'll see how we go.

To be honest he doesn't seem very interested in eating solids at all yet. Hopefully he'll come around to it at some point in the future.

It could just be that his digestive system isn't quite mature enough yet, especially if he's not bothered. And if he's not bothered, don't feel bad about having the odd day off solids if you want to.

Hi @4Brown89 how is your baby doing? We are having v similar problems with our 6mo who has been sleeping absolutely terribly (seems v windy, bad stomach pains etc) since he started wolfing down solids. I don’t know if it’s just his digestive system struggling with all the new stuff and it’ll calm down after a couple of weeks or if I should be cutting allergens out to see if he has an intolerance.... just wondered how your LO was doing now. Hope better!

Hi @Miriam101

He got better after a few days. I did only feed him small amounts and the same food a few days in a row in case he was allergic to anything. There were a few foods that seemed to make him windier so I avoided them for a while whilst his tummy got used to solids.

The problem started again once I added the 2nd meal into the day. It has got better now but he still wakes some nights with wind. I think its just something I'll have to live with for a while as adding teething into the mix has thrown everything off anyway. I'm just grateful I get more sleep than I did 3 months ago.

Hope your situation improves.
