Just got back from scary trip to doctor - my 7 month old has been in some pain when pooing and he has told me to get her to have water or juice and if it's not better she's going to be referred for a rectal biopsy, under general anaesthetic...i'm so upset and i really need some ideas on how to soften up her poo. she won't drink water from a bottle and i don't know what to do.. i really can't let them do this to her.please help..

Try giving her water in a cup. My DD wouldn't touch anything out of a bottle that wasn't milk at that age.

Try giving her tinned prunes and/or prune juice. Very effective.

does she have to be able to hold the cup herself, because she's not very good with her hands? or can you hod it like a bottle?

Lots and lots and lots of prune purée. Whole meals of it. My daughter had exactly the same problem at the same age. Prunes solved it.

Also, try massaging her tummy in a clockwise direction after a warm bath. You can use a bit of oil to make the massage a bit smoother.

Also, when she's lying on her back try doing 'bicycle legs' on her, pressing her knees gently against her tummy.

yeah i really thought he would suggest the stool softener but he didn't seem keen in the idea of medication for her.. it was a bit of a shock though.

ice lollies .. mainly water little bit of juice

Brangelina · 19/10/2007 13:07

get a cup with handles. Most babies can manage those at 6mo, so you should have no problems.

TellusMater · 19/10/2007 13:07

Another vote for prunes. We used prune juice. Marvellous stuff. Horribly effective.

Some info here

HI there my DS2 suffered really badly with his bowels from birth and we were prescribes Lactelose and also supositories to aid with going to the loo. We were also refered to a consultant who examined him and found him to have a small anus. He did not have to have sugury in the end, BUT it is important that we never allow hom to become too constipated as the stools can stretch the bowels and lead to the musles becoming lasy.

I am supprised that your GP has not prescribes lactelose, this is a type of sugar that the body does not absorb and stays in the stools making them softer, it does cause wind though.

I the other suggestions are great, warm bath with a flannel on tummy, massage and cycling legs. Cut back on bananas and stewed fruit (the pectin in appple and pears when cooks can also bung up baby's), try really soft fresh pair, grapes, extra water, fennel tea or fruit juice (but brush teeth and gums after)

Hope this helps and if you want more infor let me know
