please.

Having a debate on my Babyworld antenatal club about weaning early. Do you know when it became common place to puree foods for babies - I'm assuming that BLW has actually been around a lot longer than the concept of shovelling food into a babies mouth using a spoon (and I reckon in countries where it's common to eat with your hands it's "normal"???).

But I can't find any info on it.......

Have you looked on Aitch's blog. I know there are a whole load of links there that might lead you to something useful.

I've had a bit of a look but there's so MUCH information on there I can't find what I'm looking for

On the bottom right had side there is a section that says "Interesting Links" and it leads you to stuff like the Gill Rapley guidelins. Sorry if you have already looked there - I just found this article there link - not quite what you are looking for but there may be other stuff in that same section.

Sorry if you have already trawled through that section!

thanks - I shall have a look there later - I feel like I'm banging my head on a brick wall.

They're saying "nothing wrong with weaning early because my all m y family and friends are fine despite being weaned at 1 week old" etc (well not literally 1 week but YKWIM. And that basically the research is non-sense.

I'm trying to tell them that the research is valid but we should ALL (and that includes myself - which I've made clear - as I've started BLW with DS3 who's 21 weeks today) be aware that there are risks.

It's gone on to what age children used to be weaned in the days of old - and I'm thinking that they probably used "BLW" as blenders and food processors didn't exist and therefore it would only have been possible to wean at a later age........plus the fact that it used to be common to breastfeed to 2yr (and more).

People will always rationalise their decisions, I'm sure we all do it. Trouble with weaning, unless the baby has an instant reaction to a spoon of carrots or whatever, the connection between weaning and whatever complaint isn't made.

My mum, will mutter baby rice, blah blah, strained veg, blah blah, 6 weeks, blah, all turned out all right... but out of 4 children 2 have IBS, 1 has been overweight since childhood, and the other's a prat. COINCIDENCE???? Haven't got a clue

Good luck finding your killer argument!

phdlife · 18/10/2007 16:59

lol nobiggy

TheQueenOfQuotes · 18/10/2007 18:58

actually thanks for your help - but I'm giving up now. Apparently, even though I've stated COUNTLESS times that I've started weaning DS3 I'm "judging" those people who have also started early - and despite the fact I haven't mention a SINGLE username in any of my posts I'm "getting personal" - now I'm starting to remember why I don't use that forum much..........

According to various things I've read weaning with purées started when formulas started to become used more as they simply didn't have enough nutrients in them to sustain babies for very long...so sometime at the beginning of the last century (early 1900s). Before then, when everyone bf, it was common not to start solids until nearer 1 year old I think...but I think you have to go back very far in the western world before you get to a time when infant feeding hadn't been interfered with by medical 'experts' (who really have no idea what they were talking about )

TinkerbellesMum · 19/10/2007 11:43

That looks like you've read posts of mine lol.

There is a thread on the blog where we discussed different parenting manuals from the past and the guidelines.

In the 1700's people breastfed exclusively until a year.
In the 1920's it was 9 months.
Dr Spock brought it to 4 months.

When formula was commercialised (there are recipes on the blog if you want to make your own) in the 50s the companies needed to get custom as no one was using formula before then, they didn't need to, they had breasts if this was today formula would have a problem getting started! The way they got custom was to bring out scientists to say that breastfeeding was bad for you and the baby and formula was far superior.

The problem with formula though was that it couldn't sustain a baby for any length of time so they had to start weaning sooner, this meant that they couldn't allow a baby to self feed anymore and they had to puree food to make a baby take it earlier than they should have.

New gap opens in the market and purees become commercialised.

Since then we have been recovering from that and science has been doing it's best to get things how they should be.

No harm done? I don't know about that. Look around at the state of the world. No one knows their limits with food, we have more obesity than ever, more allergies, asthma, exzema, more people dying from heart attacks, more bowel conditions...

I wonder how many of us or our parents had lead paint on our cots and toys, we may be ok, but there was a reason it stopped being used! If you had it and are ok, you're lucky.

TinkerbellesMum · 19/10/2007 11:46

I forgot to add, around the world you can find babies being weaned up to two years old.

twinsarefun · 23/10/2007 09:54

QofQ - someone on the twins forum on BW is into BLW and left a load of info on it somewhere - would you like me to ''bump'' it for you?
