How much food for weaning?

Ds is almost 7 months.

How much is a ‘portion’ roughly at this age?
We are doing a combination of purée and finger food.

Using those little glass gu ramekins, he will eat around 1/4-1/2 full of whatever purée, then a few bits of finger food 2-3 times per day ( eats about half, other half on floor). Is this about right? Too little?

Today:
Breakfast: baby porridge with purée - about 1/2 gu pot worth. 1/4 banana as finger food
Lunch: mash avocado with a bit formula, about 1/4 pot. Few raspberries
Dinner: veggies and lentil purée 1/2 pot. Few baby spoons Greek yogurt. Rice cracker

This is the most he has ever eaten, before today have been giving about 1/2 of what he had. But he’s breastfeeding about 6-8 times daytime and 4-5 overnight still so I assume hungry, hence increase in quantity. But is that enough?

That’s certainly not too little for a 7mo. The advice when I had my Dc1 was to take it slowly and move up to three solid meals a day at about 9 months. When I had my others, I went more at their pace. In the case of DC2, that meant practically a three course meal but with DC3 it was more like the odd piece of pasta or carrot stick when he felt like it!
Surprisingly they’ve all always been in the healthy weight bracket and there’s no real difference between their eating now. Just go with your gut, be led by him and check his weight every once in a while.

That's a lot more than my DD had at that age so I wouldn't worry!

It's only been in the last month or so that she has started wanting 3 meals a day and she's nearly 1!

Not particularly worried, but is it normal they still breastfeed 12+ times per day at this age? I kind of though he would reduce milk feeds down to about 4-5 per day and maybe 1-2 overnight once on solids. He’s still feeding more often than as a newborn, plus x3 meals.
Hence wondering if the meals should be bigger

Are you doing baby led weaning or spoon feeding? BLW probably takes longer for them to drop milk feeds as not as much of the food reaches their tummy (hair on the other hand is usually well nourished 😂). Plus, fruit and vegetables are tasty and healthy but not that filling.

Caspianberg · 20/11/2020 13:25

@TooMinty - doing a mixture. He’s been eating a variety just not sure on quantities really.
Today had:
Breastfeed at 1.30am,4.30am, 6am,7am
Breakfast 8.30am : some baby porridge and apple purée, probably a heaped tablespoon worth once liquid added.
Breastfeed at 9.30am, 11.30am
Lunch: veggies blended with some salmon flaked in. Again maybe tablespoon worth. Bit of banana as finger food
Breastfeed: 2pm

He will probably have another 3/4 breastfeeds before bed, and i will offer some toast with cream cheese as finger food, then spoon some yogurt as well. It feels never ending feeding!

That sounds a nice balance, I couldn't have counted how many feeds a day mine had!
A normal amount of food varies hugely at that age, you can use normal porridge oats and cows milk without an issue. Enjoy!

TooMinty · 20/11/2020 13:50

Yeah I think feeling like you are constantly feeding them is normal, think my days went bf, breakfast, bf, nap, lunch, bf, nap, tea, supper, bf.

And maybe an extra bf between nap and tea sometimes!

Probably down to one feed at night though but they are all different. Plus bf can be for comfort not calories too.

I guess il just continue as we are then for a bit and see how he goes

Growth spurt maybe
