Question about 6PM feed in Gina Ford's book of weaning

Snowi · 17/10/2007 20:59

A bit confused where she suggests transferring 11AM rice cereal feed to 6PM, so i.o.w. feed baby rice at 11 AM for 4-6 days then move it to 6PM for 4-6 days with no 11AM feed, after wich you can re-introduce 11AM feed with puree?? What is the logic behind this? Can anyone explain to me?

there is no logic - your instincts remain your best bet

moondog · 17/10/2007 22:42

Snowi, spend your energy on summat useful like choosing a bottle of wine or having a nap.

I think her logic is that you dont introduce too much too soon i.e. only 1 meal for the first week (starts off at 11am and then is transferred to 6pm once it is known to be tolerated). The second meal is only introduced in the second week. Thats how I read it anyway (I dont have the weaning book but at one point did buy the contented baby book and it has the solids section in it)

Elasticwoman · 18/10/2007 19:51

My first baby went on to 3 meals a day immediately when I started weaning her at 5+months and she put on 19 oz in her first week!

Why use Baby Rice when ordinary ground rice is less than a tenth of the price? Babies get all the vitamins and minerals they need from milk, which you can mix with the rice. Baby Rice is just a marketing con.

beautifulboobs · 26/10/2007 23:05

Really, elasticwoman? I didn't know that! dh bought said expensive rice home tonight, and in my haste to calm ds down as I was making up his bottle, I knocked the open packet all over the floor. And now my 4 year old dd knows a swear word.I've been searching everywhere for bloody oat cereal for my not so contented little 5 month old baby, that Gina informs me has to be wheat and gluten free. I want to just use organic porridge oats, but they have gluten in them. Any ideas, anyone?

AitchTwoOh · 26/10/2007 23:44

just give the baby some Human Food.

harpsicorpsecarrier · 26/10/2007 23:48

good grief sounds complicated and stressful and a good way to sell a book
it really shouldn't be this way
try BLW
throw the baby rice away, really. filthy stuff.

beautifulboobs · 27/10/2007 01:55

Oh my God aitch, thank you! Just checked it out and how right you are. I do think Gina is very good on routine, and I really enjoyed being, pardon the pun, spoonfed on how to feed my dd, but 2nd time round, it all seems a bit of a bother. Or is that just cos I'm knackered? I started ds at 4 months, because he wasn't really satisfied and started wanting to eat every hour or so, which I didn't want to do as dd was finding she was getting no time with me whatsoever. He really enjoys his food but seems almost rabid on it, like he's grabbing the spoon to get some sense of substance in his mouth.A bit like me when I open the fridge. I guess I'm just unsure as to what's allowed. Isn't that ridiculous? I'm looking for permission to follow my instincts!

chipmonkeyPumpkinNorks · 27/10/2007 02:14

Aitch, Human food? Isn't that like, you know, cannibalism?

AitchTwoOh · 27/10/2007 11:03

seriously, i think it was whomovedmychocolate or someone whose HV wrote most disapprovingly on her notes to say that 'the child is being given Human Food', rather than purees.

i did BLW, bb, that blog thing is mine, it was a real laugh.

beautifulboobs · 27/10/2007 13:29

Well, all inspired, I took a really relaxed (in a Monica sort of way) stance today and after feeding ds his blobs of purees, I let him gnaw on a finger of cucumber.ha ha. Baby steps....baby steps. I watched him like a lab experiment, buttocks hovering above my chair, in case he should with his two tiny teeth, somehow gnaw the whole thing through and choke on a piece. Suffice to say, he's fine and my cheeks are firmly placed on the seat again!

AitchTwoOh · 27/10/2007 13:45

hurrah! it's good to be watchful, but not too freaky, iykwim?

beautifulboobs · 27/10/2007 14:00

I hear you! Great new site, by the way. I love the tip of freezing and reheating. Very do-able. Right. Mini he waking up. Lunch break over.

AitchTwoOh · 27/10/2007 14:05

oh, that's not even the new site, it's a temporary forum until we get sorted. soon it will all be at www.babyledweaning.com again...

swede70 · 30/10/2007 22:11

I think Gina means that once rice is tolerated at 11am, move it to later time...lots of other 'experts' suggests similar as if the baby reacts to something this will happen in the afternoon rather than in the middle of the night!

Babyrice is actually not that bad. It is easily digestible and contains a good amount of calories. I would suggest initially mixing vegetable purees with the rice (vegetable as it is better to go for savoury rather than sweet) as veg/fruit purees on their own are very low in calories with the result that your baby is likely to wake up again (if s/he was sleeping thru) during the night. I'd recommend staying with the dreamfeed/10.30/11pm feed until LO is well on his/her way to protein..

Try Readybrek for breakfast - recommended by my HV - (better in terms of low salt/fibre etc than Weetabix and glutenfree).

Also, oats on their own are, although not completely gluten free, very low in gluten (in fact, most people with coeliac disease - i.e. gluten allergy - can tolerate normal oats).

Why this venom for Gina? She is actually not all that bad...we're grown-ups and should be able to choose what we like (i.e. quite a lot of her recommendations on timings and food are very sensible ) and don't like (controlled crying!).

Also, I mix aspects of Babyled Weaning with 'normal' solid introduction....this way my little one is now at 6.5 months finger feeding rusks, sweet potato, porridge (messy!). I generally let him feel all food and give him a spoon to play with. Also, tend to give him finger foods before he has his puree/mashed meal at 6pm...(he will normally have had his protein meal at noon). So far, results has been great - eats everything!

Sorry...this really has been longwinded but hope it helps.

HunkOLantern · 30/10/2007 22:15

Swede, this isn't venom. Honestly.

It's just women going "meh, there are easier ways" a bit.

If you want venom...

LongMeg · 30/10/2007 22:25

Swede, the woman wanted to sue the arse off Mumsnet.

If that's not a good reason for a bit of venom, I don't know what is.

Actually, if you think this is venomous, you obviously haven't seen many Gina threads ...

tiktok · 30/10/2007 22:50

Venom?

On this thread?

Swede, you should get out more [wink}
