Tell me what veg your blw baby can't resist!

Am struggling to get DS interested in veg at all (or anything other than Philly on toast really). Have tried the usuals: carrot, broccoli, sweet potato, green beans etc, all served in the requisite chip shape, but no dice.

So what are your top tips for veg that babies can't resist? (Has no pincer grip yet so peas and stuff like that are off the menu for now...)

DD loved fistfuls of broccoli florets, will try to upload pic to my profile.. just a big ol' broccoli tree!

RubyShivers · 17/10/2007 18:47

baby sweetcorn

MaeWhooooohest · 17/10/2007 19:02

Roast red peppers (fairly sweet) and other roasted veg such as courgette, aubergine (helped that we eat quite a lot of this sort of stuff anyway).

MegBusset · 17/10/2007 19:48

Thanks all... if I roast a load of veg for my & DH's dinner, do you think they'd still be OK for DS to eat the next day?

Second the baby sweetcorn - also vichy glazed carrots (yes, hark at me). Courgettes grated into philly pesto pasta sauce go down very well, though this may be a bit early for you to do that (can't remember!)

Habbibu · 17/10/2007 19:54

Oh yes, and I should think the roast veg will be just fine the next day.

harrisey · 17/10/2007 19:55

Butternut squash! My 3 dc LOVED it. Steam and serve in cubes.

AitchTwoOh · 17/10/2007 21:33

roast sweet potato. do you see a theme emerging here?

and here's the glazed carrot recipe, habbibu's too modest to do it.

Tommy · 17/10/2007 22:31

parsnip is very popular with DS3

hadn't thought about letting him have the roasted veg - I quite often do roast peppers, mushrooms, courgettes etc for DH and me so I could save some for DS3 couldn't I? (as long as I hold off the salt I guess)

AitchTwoOh · 17/10/2007 23:28

yep.

GibbonInABloodSoakedRibbon · 17/10/2007 23:32

DD ate EVERYTHING

Till 4 weeks ago...now it all gets thrown off her tray with disdain

AitchTwoOh · 17/10/2007 23:47

lol, it's biting you in your ribboned arse. teething? too much food on the table? is it More Fun to throw it on the floor? i think dd did a bit of that, we had to give her one thing at a time for a while as i recall.

GibbonInABloodSoakedRibbon · 17/10/2007 23:57

Oh Aitch - Goodness knows what has happened....most veg is treated with contempt, lovingly prepared food is frowned upon

Serves me right with my 'ooohhh she just loves her food and will eat anything'

Yes she is teething, 13 months and teeth cutting a plenty but will still munch away on pasta, gnocchi and vintage chedder.

Am just staying breezy and chilled...hopefully this stage will pass.

AitchTwoOh · 18/10/2007 00:04

course it will. how does she feel about frozen peas? that's my fail-safe green when dd is teething. just a wee bowl in front of cbeebies and they soon disappear.

GibbonInABloodSoakedRibbon · 18/10/2007 00:10

Yes she does like them...have been giving her little pots of goodies as they seem to disappear quite easily.

What I find odd is how one day something is wonderful and the next it is the devils food.

AitchTwoOh · 18/10/2007 00:14

weird, isn't it? except i'm a bit like that myself, thinking about it. sometimes really in the mood for a particular thing, sometimes quite disgusted at the thought. it'll all be different when they can knock up their own sandwiches...

GibbonInABloodSoakedRibbon · 18/10/2007 00:20

sure will be...just wish everyone else wouldn't worry, my view is 'if she is hungry she'll eat - no fuss if she leaves the lot'

anyhoo my lovely Aitch - am off to bed..I so can't be arsed to move but must

ruddynorah · 18/10/2007 00:58

dd likes any veg at all as long as it's coated in olive oil and preferrably fried or roasted. she will eat it plain old steamed or boiled, but prefers things kind of greasy. her MOST favourite is courgette.

MrsJohnCusack · 18/10/2007 01:57

brocolli florets here too
Mine will eat anything at the moment. Was rather hoping that would encourage 2 year old DD to eat some veg too, but no

welliemum · 18/10/2007 02:45

Do you have (or could you borrow) another child?

DD2 will eat anything if it's on her sister's plate.

The broccoli is always greener, or something...

seeker · 18/10/2007 05:37

I still remember hearing a lovely elderly paediatrician on Woman's Hour talking about getting children to eat. He said that after a lifetime of experience the best tip he could pass on was that most children would eat practically anything if it was covered in garlic butter!

MegBusset · 18/10/2007 15:55

Do you think he would be OK with corn on the cob? He is 8mo. Would the corn be a choking hazard?

OP posts:
JodieG1 · 18/10/2007 15:57

My 9 month old loves brocolli and sweetcorn and will always eat those first.

JodieG1 · 18/10/2007 15:57

pics in my profile of him eating too.

MegBusset · 18/10/2007 15:59

Aw Jodie your kids are beautiful!
