BLW....................and we're off................

tonight is the night that we start BLW "properly" (as opposed to DS3 being bits of our lunch/snacks to nibble on). He's not really "old enough" (21 weeks on thursday coming) to be weaned - but hell he's a big boy and loved his banana and his cheese in the last week (without spitting out or gagging).

I've given the highchair a scrub down. And I've got some chunks of carrots and a few peas cooked for him to squish all over the nicely cleaned tray.........it's bath night tonight so it won't take me forever it all off his face either

How did it go? I hope you took lots of photos!
And how long did it take to get DS and the highchair/walls/floor clean?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 17/10/2007 00:41

It went ok actually - he immidiately tried to grab some of the stuff on his tray - but he's not quite got the grasp of picking things up yet. So I lifted a chunk of carrot up and let him grab it out of my hand - he had a good long stare of it and then shoved it in his mouth. Gnawed some off and swallowed it, then dropped it - so we repated the process 2/3 times - then he decided actually it was much more fun just to thumb and "claw" at the peas and carrot pieces than eat it. So did that for a few minutes then got bored......so we left it there.

Amazingly none on the floor and he was pretty clean too (although I anticipate that will change rather rapidly once he fully gets to grip with picking things up on his own LOL).

I took 3 pictures, one just as he made his first attempt at picking up, one of him staring intently at the piece of carrot before sampling it for the first time and one of what was left of the peas and carrots once he'd mushed them up and spread across the tray.

We shall repeat tomorrow (and I'll post the pictures too)

yeah it's a bugger - I've changed names and of course my profile isn't "visible" using a different name .

I'll sort the pictures out later

hey no, don't be embarrassed, it was AMAZING. the photo, that is.

ruddynorah · 17/10/2007 12:23

glad you're enjoying it! he'll probably be nearer 26 months before he can really pick the food up himself and eat it. have fun!

ruddynorah · 17/10/2007 12:24

ooooops!! 26 weeks of course

TheQueenOfQuotes · 17/10/2007 12:47

lol I sincerely hope he's got the hang of it by 26 months .

I know he'll take a few weeks to really be able to pick it up (well DS1 couldn't pick peas up until he was over 1yr old so I'm hoping it'll be around 26 weeks that he'll get it).

But he's happy, I'm happy, and DH is happy that he's getting "food"

I´ll come and hang out here.. ds is 24 weeks and we´re starting to dabble with weaning but nothing very organised or structured yet. Have put a photo on my profile of him nibbling very tidily at some carrot.. the banana wasn´t quite so tidy

AitchTwoOh · 17/10/2007 21:30

do NOT give them banana when they are out and about in their buggies, you will never get the stains out.

MurderousMaveta · 18/10/2007 08:47

I never realised banana stained! Was very shocked to find that after 3 washes his bib and vest still have the stains on them ok my washing machine is pretty rubbish but still.. it manages to clean his nappies and everything else..

AitchTwoOh · 18/10/2007 10:49

no, banana and pear are really bad. they look lik mould, it's revolting. [barf]

TheQueenOfQuotes · 18/10/2007 12:27

oh yes - banana is terrible - I remember that from the other DS's - and as they get older (but still needing bibs) and you use tomato based sauces - that can stain quite horribly too

well he didn't have anything yesterday (was sleeping when I'd sorted dinner out.

But he's just eaten approx 1cm square of thinly sliced cheese - this came to a rather rapid halt when he gagged on a rather large bit which he'd decided to try and swallow without chewing it first - I thought he was going to sick up the 6oz of milk he'd had 1/2hr previously - but thankfully no......however he then burst into tears and didn't want to know anymore.......fair enough we'll try again tomorrow.

I'd sliced some cucumber - but he thought that was more interesting to practice passing things from one had to another than for eating

Although actually because of his irregular sleep patterns, and DH's concerns about it (we had a bit of an argument this morning over the issue ), I think I'll offer him something to play with at dinner time too.

Breakfast will have to wait regardless of how much he starts enjoying and successfully eating - as the DS's have Wheetabix and while he's happy to gnaw off pieces of food that I either put near his mouth, or that he grabs on his own I know for a fact that anything involving a spoon is quite some time off yet. Plus of course he shouldn't be having them until he's 6 months (yes I know he shouldn't be having anyting until 6 months - but I'm at least trying to stick to the "wait until later" foods)
