My 6 month old has been weaning since 4 months and is now on 3 meals a day! Since having a consistent 3 meal a day schedule he has started to really decrease his formula intake! He used to have 4 8oz bottles a day and now it’s a push to get him to take more than 3oz most feeds! He has around 20oz a day! It’s not that he doesn’t want milk though he will cry for it like he used to and act starving but then only take a tiny bit 🧐

He seems to prefer food but I’m worrying as he has just dropped his milk so drastically! I have no clue why he is acting hungry but doesn’t want much... after about 2 oz he will start to really fuss!

6 months is young to be on 3 meals. The bare minimum they should have is 20oz from 6 months. Milk in cereal and other dairy products also count towards the total.

@dementedpixie yeah he has been weaning from 4 months and has slowly increased the amount of meals he has in a day! He much prefers to eat food than drink milk and it’s just starting to become a struggle to get him to want milk! He just doesn’t care for it! Today he only had 17oz! Normally has around 20oz!

Why did you wean so young OP?
Regardless- in answer to your question, offer formula before food not after

Hollslewis · 03/11/2020 13:14

@OnlyFoolsnMothers because he was advised to by a health professional due to his reflux! He is fed milk before food too just seems to not want milk much anymore!

Perhaps worth cutting back on a meal- make lunch more a snack?

Dd is 16 weeks this week so weaning is a couple of months off yet.

She has never taken more than 20z formula in a day, ever! Usually around 17oz.

I was speaking to her ped the other day, she has silent reflux which gavsicon actually helps, he's said to think about introducing food a little earlier than 6 months as she takes so little formula - foods we can mix formula into. She's just not interested in the bottle. Every feed is a chore to get a few oz in her. She now just smiles and laughs and plays with the teat Hmm

But even he's said it's a gamble - it might mean she takes even less formula. We've given up thinking her milk intake will magically go up - she's been drinking the same amount in 24hrs since she was 2 weeks old!

Reading your post has got me thinking about the worry I'll have when she does start eating!

(I'm not worried by 'early' weaning. My eldest is 18 and it was still 4 months then - he had severe reflux so the same ped - we've seen the same dr privately for all the kids - recommend he started solids at 14 weeks back then . Worked wonders for his reflux but Ds was a milk guzzling machine even with the reflux, so milk intake was never a worry).

Is he medicated for his reflux? Perhaps that is bothering him that’s why he isn’t taking much milk?

If he can tolerate diary I would make sure they have their calcium intake with cheese yogurt etc.

If they are having formula with their breakfast and some milk at bedtime I think that is fine.

If you are concerned about vitamins you could go to the pharmacy and get a baby multi vitamin top up.

As long as they are enjoying their food, gaining weight and have a varied diet that’s fine.

I weaned my eldest at 4 months too and he loved food more than milk.
